Yeah, not only is watermelon a diuretic (it stimulates the kidneys to produce more urine, thus filling the bladder), but it also will cause temporary prostate gland enlargement, which can make urinating extremely difficult (only in men -- women don't have prostate glands). YMMV.

dbLA. I would like to see the evidence to back that up. Watermelon is as much a diuretic as water is. 97% of watermelon is water and drinking an equivalent amount of water will cause you too pee just as much.

I went to Shanghai, China last summer. Even in the really nice resturants, all they ever served in terms of juices was either cucumber juice or watermelon juice. I was strongly urged not to try the former. So that left the watermelon juice, which was decent, but I'd still prefer orange juice anyday.

Hey Watermelon makes my mouth itchy too! Along with a few other fruits and veggies, like Durian (I'm vietnamese/chinese) eggplant.... and ummm that's all I can remember.

As I said, "YMMV" (your mileage may vary), but whenever I eat more than a few slices of watermelon, I have a hell of a time peeing. Other diuretics (like caffeine) make me pee more also, but with no difficulty. Sample size of one, so its purely anecdotal. Seeking other volunteers for self-experimentation. Maybe watermelon affects only me that way.

I don't have any clinical or scientific references handy to support the claim that watermelon is a diuretic. I do know that preparations made from watermelon seed extract are sold with the claim that it works as a diuretic. Maybe its some sort of wives tale or urban legend.

Here's another wild, unsupported claim: Watermelon is rich in lycopenes, which may help prevent prostate cancer.

Thanks for the post. This maybe first in USA, but in Asia, there are tons of all the fruit juices that you've never heard of. I went there last summer, and saw juice from lycees, longan, ramputan, mango, guava, papaya, sour plum, watermelon, melon, etc and many other vegetable juices.
