Wow, what a great response! I am glad to see that so many folks are excited about this free software. Lately I've been exploring a lot more free stuff in an attempt to see about having everything legit and yet all functions met using primarily free software. Obviously you can't really get away from Windows effectively, but still, if you Newegg you can get XP Pro for around $140. Adding this goody along with many others can really put you in business for a damn cheap amount of cash.

I wonder, do we have an official Free Software thread floating around somewhere? I've got some great suggestions of late

I set it up with XMLTV last night. This is a very nice free program. It has bugs, especially with dialog windows, but it works.

This isn't to simple to set up, but it's about the easiest and most complete out of all the MCE clones out there.

Hmm, I could not find tuner/capture device list. Would it work with ATI Wonder USB 2.0?

It would be nice to have an open source category.

True. Although I wonder, does it *have* to be open *source* ? I'm torn because I recently discovered CD BurnerXP Pro 3.0, which is free, but not open source. It's a surprisingly good burning software ( I just dumped Nero for it today) that's robust and small.

Oh well. Free software is all good. I'm working on an unattended Windows XP installation CD that has a bunch of free or open source apps installed automatically. If I can get the authors' permission I might just release the pack all bundled together so folks can download and use it in their own WinXP unattended installs.

Hardware + Linux + MythTV or Hardware + Windows XP + MediaPortal

I'm thinking MythTV setup will be a little cheaper since the end users doesn't require the purchase of Windows XP which is about an extra $100.

Something to think about.

Tried this, but had a helluva time getting the TV Guide portion to work. I've even used the autoupdater that some in the MP forums created. It pulls in the channels for my area, dumps it to a file I named TVGuide.xml, but when I point MP to the xmltv folder for the data, it will not show any data from within the MediaPortal My TV section. I'm comparing this to the (not free) Beyond TV and its elegant setup, which was a totally brainless setup. I'm disappointed in that so far, but I haven''t given up on it just because it requires a good deal of user effort.

I've tried this software. The recording quality was absolutely terrible, and it kept giving me bluescreens on recordings over 1/2 hour.

I'm stupid and pay $12.95/month for Tivo, but yet I'm somehow happy
