I asked and Mark Brown from Microsoft Marketing who's the one in charge of this
promotion said that it was a full retail license version.

Given the way the discs are labeled, I guess that'd be "RETAIL NFR (not for resale)",
specifically.

Too bad we don't have any tax lawyers around. MS is sending us NFR and claiming that they are Full Retail just doesn't add up. You can't have both.

Yeah I agree.
Vista is NFR.
Office is MEDIA-LESS and possibly NFR also.

Typically you can order media-less and NFR versions at a substantial discount off full retail MSRP, so, yeah, the taxable value
of these OUGHT to be according to those discounted valuation schedules and not same-as-full-MSRP since we should be
getting packages, discs, and resale rights if they were truly full retail versions.

Well hey Microsoft had to figure out some way to keep the government happy so it doesn't keep suing it for anti-trust violations,
and a free $200,000 tax revenue windfall is a great way to make 'em happy! That's really said with humor / sarcasm.

Actually more seriously, though, I'm pretty sure MS is able to deduct the full MSRP value of the gifts as product marketing expenses
off their OWN tax dues and profits, so given that it probably costs them $15 per set and they get a $798 tax deduction per set,
they've got a pretty cheap way to save $20,000,000 or whatever on their own taxes. Nobody ever accused MS of being
bad at making money... though given the "years in the making" VISTA development tragedy/saga, I suppose they need to start making
some of the billions they spent on its development back!

And for today's humor:

(a small excerpt from Channel9)

Im typing this now on my Vista x64 Business.
...
On another note, I had to install vista 3 times.
...
After installing Avast antivirus windows would no longer boot. i tried safe mode, repair, everything, dead. only a fresh install would do.

That's great testimony that AVAST works very well at doing what it's supposed to do;
I suppose it detected the DRM infection and cleaned it right up!

I haven't got mine yet either.

Some info from other forums:

1. The Vista/Office 2007 deals are both shipping some people are getting both.

2. The Vista key works with 64 bit editions as well, you just need the media.

3. The Office 2007 is a download, just a cardboard folder with an url and the key.

Who knows how long the whole process will take, it could be a couple of weeks.

Got mine as well today. It could have been in there for a couple days as I have not felt like checking the mail for a few days

Lovely... BSOD on boot. Odd thing is I never had a problem with the betas.

Perhaps it was because I had my machine highly overclocked while installing Vista. I've rolled back to XP Pro and will try installing Vista again without any OCing.

You can order the x64 media for vista here though it may be a couple more days
before they put the website online to take orders... maybe that will be on the
30th or maybe beforehand:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/1033/ordermedia

Or if you know someone who has the disc you should be able to just legally
use it or copy the installer files since you're licensed for using it.

No joy today for me, I haven't yet received the
VISTA + OFFICE shipment in NW Oregon as of today, and I faxed in my W9
on the evening of the first day that people were getting the confirmation emails
with the link to the W9 site.

Maybe it'll be here tomorrow.

Well, installing Vista without overclocking still produces a BSOD on boot. It reboots so fast that I can't even tell what is causing it.

Perhaps it's a problem with the 680i? I guess I'll have to look into it some more. At least it is easy to go back to XP.
Turned out it was just a driver problem when trying to upgrade.. doing a clean install has been smooth sailing.

I got mine today. In Maryland in case you're keeping track. I'm currently backing up files, and I'll repartition my hd to give Vista more room. I had RC2 on a 20gb partition. I want to give Vista most of the room now.

Well....I'm going back to Windows XP Pro.
I installed Vista today and my soundblaster live! 5.1 doesn't have full driver support / no bass and treble control; the sound is flat and horrible.

All the new sound cards are terrible when it comes to music. Live! is the best sounding, even though it is about six years old. I tried the X-Fi Music edition / Audigy 4, they were bad. All Creative has to do is somehow enable bass/treble control and I will be happy, but they no longer are supporting SB Live! (X-Fi Extreme Gamer might be good, but $150+)

The TV tuner (TV Wonder Pro), according to AMD/ATI is vista compatible; but there is no software for it.

Without quality sound and ATI TV, vista is useless.
The bad thing is that Creative doesn't want to support the 'old' SB Live! sound cards.

Perhaps. I had thought that when I was participating in the program, but I installed it as soon as I had the time today. Besides the fact that I had to do a clean install and couldn't upgrade, everything has been great. Then again, it's only been 8 hours...

I hope we get it soon, I want it!

By the way, I'm in FL.

I cannot install Vista without getting the 0x80070241 error on my machine no matter what I try. I'm hoping its just because I have a faulty DVD, although this problem has been documented by many others without a satisfactory soln from Microsoft.

Are there any other ATers that got in on this deal from the Madison, WI area that would let me borrow their install DVD to try and see if it really is a problem with the DVD? Please PM me if you could help me out. I haven't received a response to my email to the powerogether folks at MSFT. thanks very much.

Cheers,
HeavyB

It is just a color printed folded cardboard sleeve sealed at the edge with no media inside, I have not broken the seal and opened it but I did peek inside and see a download URL and the key.

Not received in Seattle yet. And I am only a ten minute drive from Mr. Gate's front gate.

I got my Vista Business. They shipped from Redmond. It comes as a single DVD disk in a pretty simple disk jacket. It only has the 32bit version on this disk. I does say you can upgrade to ultimate though for $139.
