at the site it mentions that you will get the software "within 6-8 weeks of the it?s release to manufacturing". Anyone know when/how long that will actually be.
I was able to qualify for the Office before it sold out.

They released Vista Business and Office 2007 on 30 November AFAIK, and it's
been said on the channel9 MS blog that they'd likely be 'shipping' the
products around the mid to end of January 2008 consistent with the 6-8 week
figure.

I've seen elsewhere (I believe somewhere on the PowerTogether site) that the
OFFICE product will NOT be SHIPPED, but will be a DOWNLOAD of the full
product and its installation key which is OK as long as it's not too painful for you
to burn to CD/DVD for backup.

Vista should be shipped as the normal business edition DVD(s) though.

Pdawg1717, looks like Vista contains both 32-bit and 64-bit in one DVD.

Found this link from a MSDN blog.

Hmm thanks to the person who provided that link, though I do see that it's a bit
old (may 2006 IIRC).

My personal preferences would be that they'd just optionally install BOTH 32 and 64 bit
codes on the same machine and then they'd be activated as the same 'product' and
same 'machine' and it'd just be a boot time option as to which mode you'd want to
boot into. That way if you had to play games or do something needing hardware
with no good 64 bit driver, you could reboot to 32 bit, otherwise you could enjoy
the hopefully better performance / security of 64 bit mode.

Alternatively I'd certainly want to be able to create a pair of 3GB partitions and install
32 bit vista to one, 64 bit vista to the other, and selectively dual-boot depending on
my needs and have the activation system be smart enough to realize that it's
the same activation / machine and that it's just a case of someone prefering 64bit
but needing to occasionally run 32 bit for hardware / software compatibility / testing
reasons....

It's totally NUTS that you can't (if a comment I've read is true) "upgrade" from 32 bit
XP to 64 bit Vista since you couldn't even choose to BUY 64 bit vista when the
currently popular 64bit CPUs were introduced, so it's hardly the customer's falut
for not running XP64 since that was never even AVAILABLE as a consumer product
when many of us bought our 64 bit machines, and even after they introduced it
as a product it wasn't made available to consumers for XP HOME nor was it really
"usable" due to all the sw/hw incompatibility anyway!

EDIT: I mean to say you ought to be able to use any "upgrade" edition key of vista
with 64 or 32 bit mode installation coming from any XP 32 or 64 installation.
Even if you can't do an "in place" upgrade from 32 to 64, only a clean install...

I completed all the webcasts and surveys, but haven't gotten the "congratulation" email to confirm that I will receive the gift. How about you guys?

I never got a congratulation e-mail. Instead, when logged in it says congratulations on the Power Together website if you click on the My Stuff link. I never took any surveys or have I seen where to take them. Do they e-mail the survey or what? Other than that, the 3 webcast I took show up as completed.

Thanks. I see it now.

Both sides of the site work for me. The Vista side started working again yesterday. I was able to log in an verify that all 3 of my selected webcasts show "completed." I hope I get the free copy of Vista. If not, as a developer, some of the available webcasts on the Vista side are pretty interesting/educational. I've watched 7 or 8 by now.

As for when it will ship, I've seen several people on Channel9 say that the guy who started the promotion (Mark something) mentioned in one of his posts that it would likely ship mid-January. Take that for what it's worth.

So couple of tangential questions:

a) If anytime in the tax year 2007 (since that's when we'll get these presumably)
you see these products offered on sale elsewhere for less than the MSRP value
that they report on your 1099, can you easily claim the taxable received value as the
lesser "fair market value" vs. the MSRP which is clearly typically much higher than
anyone actually pays for a product since there are always sales / discounts etc.?

b) Can you legally / easily sell these unused licences / products e.g. eBAY or whatever?
IIRC I've heard things like Microsoft canceling / forbidding eBAY sales of their
products etc. though I'm rather unclear as to what legal basis they'd have for preventing
an individual from selling a product they own and haven't activated at all.
The only reason I'd consider selling them is that I *do* want to use and develop with
Vista / Office, though I think I'd be happier with Vista Home Pro or Vista Ultimate,
and Office Standard since I have no need of Outlook really, so without any real
given option as to what FLAVOR of product we're receiving here, I'm wondering about
financing a switch-over to the products I'd get best use of.

For Vista, I suppose I might be able to do a windows "anytime upgrade" from
Vista Business to Vista Ultimate, though I'm not so sure I could do an (it better be
really cheap if it's possible!) "anytime upgrade" from Vista Business to
Vista Home Pro -- though that might be interesting if the result was something that
had all of the features of BOTH Business/Home Pro vs. JUST the features of the Home Pro.

I thought it said somewhere in some FAQ that the Office product was going
to be delivered as a download, not as a disc.

Though really it'd be nice if they just gave the download option for both Vista and Office
and made them available sooner than 8 weeks.. then again I'll be busy so I guess I can
wait.

My understanding is that you're correct - you can do an anytime upgrade from Business to Ultimate, but not from Business to Home Pro. Since the difference in retail price between Business and Ultimate is $100, that'd be a pretty good guess as to upgrade costs, although MS hasn't announced anything. But, think of it this way - if you took advantage of the free Business offer, and upgraded to Ultimate, you're paying $100 bucks for a $400 piece of software. Not bad....

EDIT: Check out this website...it does a rundown of many Vista features including Anytime Upgrade. According to this guy, Business can only be upgraded to Ultimate.

As to your tax related question, I'm not a CPA, but "fair market value" is considered to be what the market would pay, which is clearly the MSRP. I'd claim that amount if you want to play it safe. But hey, also keep in mind that the IRS only audits 1 % of all tax returns, so why not roll the dice?

That's cool, but I was hoping it'd be sooner. The website mentioned shipping 6 to 8 weeks from release to manufacturing, and the RTM version came out in early November. I'd be pretty surprised to see it before mid/late January though...I guess beggars can't be choosers.

So is this how they are going to "convert" people to Vista? I mean, I've heard nothing but grief when it comes to the OS so I was wondering how MS would convince others (apart from installing Vista on new machines) to install.

I initially only signed up for Vista after reading the warnings regarding the W9 form, figuring that was worth more than Office to me, but I still completed the Office side of the site as well. It says I will be receiving the Office product as well, but I had not asked for both at first, and did not do any W9 pre-registration form either, so I likely won't be seeing that. The vlab was quite cool, and taught me a lot more than the webcast did in regards to using Office itself.

I finished all of my videos for Vista... The last one switched to "completed" a few days ago. I just got my surveys the other day, as well.
I'm starting to get a little worried because I haven't received the "we will ship in 6-8 weeks" confirmation...

Log in to the site and scroll down to the bottom of your "My Stuff" page. that's where I see the "Congratulations....sending in 6 to 8 weeeks" message. I haven't received anything by email saying congratulations.

Cheers,
