Office 2007 arrived today. It came in a HUGE envelope and is just a cardboard brochure looking thing with the product key inside and the web address to go download the software.

Edit:
It's downloading now ... a bit slow, around 300KB over my 8MB Comcast connection. It is a 389MB file. The information says it requires 2GB to install ... I am guessing this installer will expand during the install and then files will be removed. I was hoping it would be a ISO that could be burned to CD for future reinstalls.

You can just burn the .exe file to a disc...

I got mine, but can't get it to install. Fresh install or upgrade from XP Pro, it gets to the "Completing Installation " stage and just stays there.... no HD activity, no disk activity, just the periods at the end going from 1 to 3 over and over again. I've left it overnight and nothing...

Any ideas what I should try to get this to install? I have an Athlon64 processor on a Jetway S755MAX motherboard. I've seen a few things that mention the chipset on my motherboard may be the problem, but nothing specific. I'm really at a loss.

Has anyone tried installing their copy of Office 2007 multiple times? I just got my CD key in the mail today. I'd like to install it first in a VMware guest to see how I like it. From there, I'd install it "for real" if it made the grade. Am I going to get tripped up by this activation stuff?

I haven't got mine yet either.

Some info from other forums:

1. The Vista/Office 2007 deals are both shipping some people are getting both.

2. The Vista key works with 64 bit editions as well, you just need the media.

3. The Office 2007 is a download, just a cardboard folder with an url and the key.

Who knows how long the whole process will take, it could be a couple of weeks.

Hmmm...where to get the media...

Borrow it or download the trial version.

Where can you dl the trial version of business x64?

Anyone have any clue where the installer files are hiding? I have it installed, but a whole Gig of hard drive space is taken up now. What can I delete to free up some room? (I really need to reconfigure my partitions .... I have/had less than 3GB free of 30 on my main C partition)

I received mine today and installed it. There are a lot of subtle differences between RC2 and the final version, it's a bit more polished. Thank you Microsoft! Hope all you guys get your stuff soon.

Got mine today. Before upgrading my XP install, I made a perfect Ghost image of my boot partition (thankfully.)

Installed Vista as an upgrade. First impression - what a POS.

Lot's of driver compatiblity problems and program compatibility problems. The Aero interface looks very pretty and works well for some things, but when I run one of my regular programs like Quicken, the text in the program doesn't look razor sharp, it looks fuzzy, kind of like running my LCD at a non-standard resolution. Other programs also suffer from this annoying problem. Word, Explorer and other MS programs, the text looks fine. Probably turning off the Aero interface would solve this particular problem.

Another thing I didn't like is the upgrade would not proceed unless I uninstalled my primary burning program, which I really like, Nero 6.

I know doing an upgrade to a loaded XP install is not the classic best install method, but in my opinion this is a true test of how well the program works. Thankfully I was able to reinstall my XP install from the image file and am back to something that works good for me.

I don't forsee myself installing this OS in the near future. I have too many pieces of hardware and programs that are not completely compatible. I thank my lucky stars I didn't pay for this program.

All this being said, for many users who don't run a lot of different programs and odd hardware, they might love the program, and there is no doubt it will be more stable less prone to spyware and that stuff.

The MSLT says you can transfer it to a new machine, but only once every 90 days.
You also can have concurrent installs on a main PC and a portable PC also.

You can do your experimentation with one of the 60 day free trial keys
they're giving out; only activate with your permanent key once you decide on a
configuration you're likely to keep for a few months.

MSOCache the folder is called it's hidden so you need to change that in explorer so you can see them all. It's on the root drive that you installed Office on.

I completed & FAXed my W9 on the first day they were sending out
lots of confirmation emails.

Today I got my Office & Vista in the mail in NW Oregon; good stuff, it'll be fun to
play with the new features in a few days once I finish my backups and stuff in preparation
to installing it, and whenever NVIDIA gets around to releasing a working DX10 VISTA
driver for 8800's.

u can install it on another partition without a problem.... but if u relle want to find the installation files usually they are hidden in the temp folders... check this location which is hidden... C:\Documents and Settings\UrUsername\Local Settings\Temp

UrUsername = the username u use to login to windows.....

just copy and paste that whole address in the address bar while in a regular window.... and u will be directed there....

or click start - run paste the above address: C:\Documents and Settings\Ergys\Local Settings\Temp and hit enter

Is this true
? You can install Vista on a desktop and a notebook at the same time under the license that comes with our copy?

Transfer is not the same as copy!

Cool. Thanks! And while poking around I found a folder called USMT2 that was over 3GB! Holy smokes! I have room on my C drive again!

Now does anyone know for sure ... is this Office 2007 that we got considered a retail version? Or Not-for-resale? Or OEM? Does the license provide for installing on one desktop and one laptop, as in prior versions of Office? And by choosing to upgrade my prior install of Office XP and remove the old files, does that free up that one for installation elsewhere?

I did try to read the EULA but it's not very clear.

Did you install a DVD decoder? You need something like PowerDVD or WinDVD so Windows can play the file. Maybe Home Premium and Ultimate come with the decoder. I've been kind of curious about that.

What is the purpose of USMT2? Is it totally unnecessary?

Anyway Office 2007: I have not seen anywhere where it says it's NFR; if it doesn't say so in the EULA then I'm guessing it's not. It is considered a retail license,
though retail licenses can ALSO be NFR if you read the MSLT/EULA, but, again, I have yet to see anywhere where it says it's NFR so lacking evidence to the contrary,
it'd be just plain retail AFAIK.

The license DOES permit simultaneous installation and use on a primary PC *and also* an additional "portable pc"; this is according to the MSLT
in English for the component Office 2007 programs as of the time I downloaded and read them earlier in the week from the following site:
http://www.microsoft.com/about/legal/useterms/default.aspx
Since that time it looks like the webmaster has screwed up the site and I can not at the moment find the English MSLT versions there to quote
and link directly, but I'm certain it is permitted and I've saved the MSLTs that confirm that on my other PC.

I don't know what terms existed for your old Office version; if it's a RETAIL version that's been rightly transfered to you,
I would certainly expect that you could transfer the old Office suite to a different PC not anytime you like. I would only
think that it might be a problem if you had owned an OEM license or a "subscription" license instead of a perpetual RETAIL one.
I'm sure you can consult the exact MSLT/EULA language about transfers / replacement PCs for your old version either online or
as part of that old version's files / paperwork to verify this.

Good luck / enjoy!

I thought that having a built in DVD decoder at least for "normal DVDs" (as opposed to
high definition BluRay/HD-DVD discs) was a 'feature' of Vista that was to make it better than XP.

I've not seen anywhere that claimed that a DVD playing decoder was NOT to be present in
any edition of VISTA, and I'd certainly be disappointed in Microsoft if they've excluded it!

I don't know what Media Player version comes with VISTA; I imagine you MIGHT get more
codecs and playable formats supported if you upgrade it to whatever the latest one is... WMP11, IIRC.

Yes, according to the license terms I read a few days ago it's explicitly permitted -- here is the research I did --

The "RETAIL" license appears to permit installation and use on
both a primary and secondary e.g. portable machine, as well
as the ability to transfer the software from one device to another
every 90 days.

The "OEM" and "MEDIA-LESS" licences, however (in the same
"Word 2007 English" document, seem to lack several of the
terms and permissions relating to transfers between
devices and additional use on other (e.g. portable) devices.

See here for details:

Below are three separate sets of License Terms. Only one set applies to you. To determine which License
Terms apply to you check the license designation printed either on your product key, near the product name
on your Certificate of Authenticity, or on the download page if you obtained your product key online. If your
designation is FPP, then the Retail License Terms below apply to you. If your designation is OEM, then the
OEM License Terms below apply to you. If your designation is MLK, then the Media-less License Kit Terms
below apply to you.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. RETAIL LICENSE TERMS
...
2. INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS. Before you use the software under a license, you must assign that
license to one device. That device is the ?licensed device?. A hardware partition or blade is considered
to be a separate device.

a. Licensed Device. You may install and use one copy of the software on the licensed device.
b. Portable Device. You may install another copy on a portable device for use by the single primary
user of the licensed device.
c. Separation of Components. The components of the software are licensed as a single unit. You
may not separate the components and install them on different devices.
...
8. BACKUP COPY. You may make one backup copy of the media. You may use it only to reinstall the
software.
...
10. NOT FOR RESALE SOFTWARE. You may not sell software marked as ?NFR? or ?Not for Resale.?
...
15. REASSIGN TO ANOTHER DEVICE. You may reassign the license to a different device any number of
times, but not more than one time every 90 days. If you reassign, that other device becomes the
?licensed device.? If you retire the licensed device due to hardware failure, you may reassign the license
sooner.
16. TRANSFER TO A THIRD PARTY. The first user of the software may make a one-time transfer of the
software, and this agreement, directly to a third party. The first user must uninstall the software before
transferring it separately from the device. The first user may not retain any copies. Before any
permitted transfer, the other party must agree that this agreement applies to the transfer and use of the
software. The transfer must include the proof of license. If the software is an upgrade, any transfer
must also include all prior versions of the software.

Well considering Ryans attempts at OEM recactivations I think I may just sell my business copy and buy a Ultimate OEM DVD for like $200.

Saves the hassle of any time upgrade, and the outrageous price upgrade, $139, vs say $60 more if I sell my business edition and pay for a ultimate dvd.

Prolly going to wait and see what else MS comes out with for Ultimate within the first week or so first.

Do both devices have to belong to me? Because if you just take that quote verbatim, that would mean that after 90 days, I can install Vista on my friend's computer. Does their definition of "reassign" mean "delete from old device and then install on a different device"?
