Free is good.
Consensus is that the best word processor ever made is WordPerfect and version 11 has just been released.

What can you do with monopoly power?
- Convince the majority to abandon a superior product like WordPerfect and switch to inferior one like MS Word and have them pay several times more for it. That's what.

No offense, but consensus of who? You and your buddies? Wordperfect people are just like Mac people (IMO), there aren't a lot of them left and the ones that are left, are jaded.

I use AbiWord among others and I find it works well for me though I mostly use Yeah, Write (from former WordPerfect staffers at: www.wordplace.com ) as it can do almost all that I need in that department quicker than anything else.
And AbiWord works enough like Word that anyone can easily get used to it.

Why the hell do people post free Linux programs on a message board? Go get a clue. Real people know about this stuff.

I consider myself a Linux person and M$ Office is the only M$ software I use. No other office suite (on Linux or any other OS) comes close to it. I used to use Corel's WordPerfect. It was good but M$ Word is better. (Yes, I do have a PC running Windows XP, just for M$ Office.) I used to think FrameMaker was cool. That was before I switched to M$ Word.

Exactly what I was thinking. I have only kown a few WP users my entire computing life and they also remind me of MACheads.

Yes it is. IIRC Sun is now selling it. It used to be free. OpenOffice is a spinn-off of StartOffice. I could be wrong.

I think Sun StarOffice is the Pay_for_spinoff of Open Office. I could also be wrong.

mra,

StarOffice includes some non-free software (a database, as I recall) and also includes support.

How long has your computing life been? I'm 29 and I can definitely remember when WordPerfect was the dominant product...

Anyhow, I still use WordPerfect for its ability to reveal codes. Except for a text processing language like TeX, it's hard to get a finer level of control over your document than you can get with the reveal codes feature. I still get pissed off by Word's attempts to create "styles" on the fly and apply them where I don't want them (yes, I know I can turn that off, but I collaborate on documents with other people who don't know how and somehow manage to screw up the styles again).

The word left means that I know it had a great following at one time.

OK I'll take you on.

I resent the Mac comparison.

Switch was made to MS Word because of Microsoft monopoly power not superior quality. It is obvious that having MS Word is useful because you need it to better share files with others. After all, Word does come pre-installed on many machines.

Mac comparison doesn't hold water because who can argue Mac when $43 AMD easily knocks it out.
WordPerfect Office costs several times less than MS Office, making this more like AMD vs. Intel comparison, not Mac vs PC. (Intel has an over 80% share, are 15-19% of us who use AMD jaded?)

If you didn't need to share files and if you just concentrated which word processor is better performance wise, consensus by people who use advanced features intensively is that WordPerfect wins hands down.

It is not us who are jaded.
It is you who are conformist.

Exactly my sentiments. Word Shmurd !!!. Openoffice does more than a good job for my normal word processing requirements. Better still use Latex. (ok thats into the realms of geekdom) . Dont remember when i last rebooted into Windoze. While we are on the anti MS stuff lemme also do a pitch for Phoenix and Mozilla.
