Open office is great. I use it on both Windows XP and Linux without any problems, with full compatibility with my uninformed colleagues who use MS Word.

Consensus is that the best word processor ever made is WordPerfect and version 11 has just been released.

What can you do with monopoly power?
- Convince the majority to abandon a superior product like WordPerfect and switch to inferior one like MS Word and have them pay several times more for it. That's what.

No offense, but consensus of who? You and your buddies? Wordperfect people are just like Mac people (IMO), there aren't a lot of them left and the ones that are left, are jaded.

I guess you haven't been in very many government offices lately. Don't confuse home users with business users. Never ever send a Word document to a WordPerfect user electronically if you have deleted something you don't want them to see, because WordPerfect sees all.

I would use OpenOffice more often if the spellcheck actually worked properly.

Anway, yes, OpenOffice is more than enough for typing school papers and reports. However, I would recommend MSOffice if you already have it or have access to it; you would have the peace of mind that whatever it output would be widely accepted and compatible with others' computers (which would most likely use MSOffice).

Use MSOffice if you have it. Use OpenOffice if you don't.

Nice. I'd like to test that. How is it done in WordPerfect?

Screw that. DOS based desktop publishing can be done! They fit software on 1.44 MB floppies before

I still don't see why this thread is at the top. Is everyone totally oblivious of the tech world?

Exactly my sentiments. Word Shmurd !!!. Openoffice does more than a good job for my normal word processing requirements. Better still use Latex. (ok thats into the realms of geekdom) . Dont remember when i last rebooted into Windoze. While we are on the anti MS stuff lemme also do a pitch for Phoenix and Mozilla.

DaScud.

I love VI myself and use it all the time. In fact I even have the cygwin software to simulate vi and bash on windows. Though vi and word/wordperfect are apples and oranges. Default format in both Wordperfect and Word is binary whereas vi is a text editor.

yeah write

Now that's a blast from the past. I used that like 3 years ago. Went and checked it out and the latest news is from.... 3 years ago.

Talk about frozen in time.

Openoffice, word, abiword all are good food.

Word perfect still rocks because it has "reveal codes" even after all these years, it is still the only world processor that actually lets you see the contents of the files you are generating......

re. Yeah, Write...
. Well, when you've got it right, you don't have to change it. YW does exactly what it was designed to do without fail.
None of the bloated catchalls gets the work done as quickly. I can knock out a letter or memo, or a page of the book I'm working on before the majors would even have finished loading.

Sheesh Jugernot....read what the guy wrote back. He was questioning Ronstang's age since he said he has only known a few WP users in his whole computing life. Then he stated that he was 29 and could remember when WP was the dominant product. So do I for that matter. I remember a time when I would not touch Word because it was a POS and had little functionality and WP beat it without even thinking about it. For that matter, same can be said about Lotus 1-2-3 and a comparision can be made between any Office product and what it was meant to replace.

I must say, the only real reason I switched is because the company I now work for uses it. I do not do enough word processing, nor utilize enough of the functions, to make any sort of statement as to which one is "better" than the other. Either one would work for me and if I need to use any advanced features, I know how to search on the net to find what I need.

I use Word Perfect, Word is easily more popular. But I don't base my choices off what other people do. If I did, I'd love Justin Timberlake & Kelly Clarkson. I find WP to be more intutive on almost every level. MS seems to basically take the good features from WP and throw them in the next version of Word as "brand spanking new!"
but that is just my opinion.

Seriously though,

Emacs has a mail client, a web browser, an IRC client, an AIM client, and even the kitchen sink! (literally, there is one)

I much prefer vi. VI RULES. Vim is nice for the syntax highlighting while I'm programming, other than that I like nice, plain 'ol vi.

Ditto, the tidal wave of word is tough to duck.

I use word at home and wp at the office (legal). They are both solid word processors. I'm more familiar with Word because of a decade of historywith it... but at this point I would be hard pressed to say one is leaps and bounds ahead of the other.

Use whatever you want. It's the interoperability and longevity of the file formats
that matter. Document lock-in (look what IE has done to the web) is evil.
