They've finally upgraded the bittorrent edition (free) to 3.0. This is the only distro I've felt comfortable with moving from windows. This is the distro that started out as Corel. Link

I've never used Linspire, but I've installed Xandros before and it is really easy to install and use. Only problem I had was it's not as good with older hardware as Mandrake is (I had an ISA controller for a pcmcia drive that fit in the 5 1/4 bay, and it didn't detect it at all.)

But I can tell you now that the Crossover Office is excellent, it is much better than wine (I know CO is based off wine, but it has much better compatibility and usability, and is much easier to configure and setup). It's kind of confusing if you look at their website because it only mentions a list of applications it can run, but in fact you can run any program you want with it, it just isn't supported, but I found the app I was trying to get to run in wine, ran near perfectly in CO, whereas it wouldn't hardly run at all in wine itself.

All in all, Xandros is definitely worth a try if you have newer hardware.

Every year or so I play around with the newest linux distros (they change leaps and bounds sometimes)..

Ive tried the newest free versions of Linspire, SimplyMepis, Fedora, Mandrake, ELX, and Knoppix

Looking for something that I would concider a real windows replacement for the everyday user (your parents)... So far ELX Everyone's Linux, is the best in my book (so far)

Ill put Xandros on my '2 do' list, thanks for the link

I'm currently using it and I definitly like it. I also installed it on my brothers old 700 Mhz Athlon because he didn't want to use win 98 and XP wouldn't run on it. So I gave Xandros a shot and he definintely likes it. It's very easy to use as well.
Here's a comparison chart detailing how the OCE version is different from the retail versions:

In response to Marco2's question about Corel Linux, I believe they stopped samething with WordPerfect for Corel.

If you want it available for Linux, people need to start contacting these software companies and request that they make software for Linux. I've done that for Canon drivers, Google's Picasa, Corel, Filezilla, Macromedia etc. The more people that request it, more likely they will do one as they state in on their sites.
So far Ahead Nero released a version of their burning software for Linux and just recently Adobe released the new version of Acrobat. Keep bugging them and let them know how easy it's getting to use Linux, especially with Xandros and Linspire.

Naw, This is a full but stripped down version. It just doesn't have crossover office other non-free apps. It runs my server. If you decide to use it make sure you configure it to get applications from Debian. Alot more resources there. I also use it to browse the web while my main machine is running autogk. Posting from it now.

To download from Debian
1. open up Xandros Networks.
2. Go to Edit and select "Set Application Sources"
3. What you will currently see selected is "Xandros distribution site", but select "Debian unsupported site" too and click OK
4. Once you hit OK, Xandros networks will begin getting info of packages. You will see a progress bar. Eventually that progress bar will stall and you will think it's not working. The solution to this is to cancel after you're tired of waiting. Then close Xandros Networks. Reopen Xandros Networks. Then close it one more time and then reopen it. Now you can search for programs in debian unsupported.

Remember to unselect Debian unsupported after you're done searching or installing a program in Xandros Networks.

You can also add these application sources to Xandros Networks.

deb http://www.archlug.org/apt xandros3 archlug
deb http://www.archlug.org/apt xandros3 boylinux
deb http://www.archlug.org/apt xandros3 zzupp
deb http://www.xandros.or.id/archive xxx main

If you download from one of the above sources, have debian unsupported enabled.
After you're done with Xandros Networks, remember to unclick the other sources and only leave "Xandros distribution site" enabled.
