What do you guys do w/ the problem of not being able to write to NTFS file systems? Do you have a dual boot and have this problem or do you just use Xandros and Xandros alone?

I prefer simplemepis over xandros.

http://www.mepis.org/

It's only one CD, and it's also liveCD/Installer, so you can test it before with out risking you windoze stuff and find out if your hardware will work.

As I understand no Linux OS can safely write to ntfs. If you want a shared partition make it fat32. I run Xandros alone as a server- then make shares for my windows machines.

Quote:
To download from Debian
1. open up Xandros Networks.
2. Go to Edit and select "Set Application Sources"
3. What you will currently see selected is "Xandros distribution site", but select "Debian unsupported site" too and click OK
4. Once you hit OK, Xandros networks will begin getting info of packages. You will see a progress bar. Eventually that progress bar will stall and you will think it's not working. The solution to this is to cancel after you're tired of waiting. Then close Xandros Networks. Reopen Xandros Networks. Then close it one more time and then reopen it. Now you can search for programs in debian unsupported.

Remember to unselect Debian unsupported after you're done searching or installing a program in Xandros Networks.

You can also add these application sources to Xandros Networks.

deb http://www.archlug.org/apt xandros3 archlug
deb http://www.archlug.org/apt xandros3 boylinux
deb http://www.archlug.org/apt xandros3 zzupp
deb http://www.xandros.or.id/archive xxx main

If you download from one of the above sources, have debian unsupported enabled.
After you're done with Xandros Networks, remember to unclick the other sources and only leave "Xandros distribution site" enabled.

Wow thanks for the info. And very cool for only your second post. Welcome to AT.

Running it right now, pretty nice. No support for my Microtek Scanmaker 5950, but looks and feels very nice.

Dragonbate thanks. I've always scanned through the Anandtech boards, but decided to post on something I enjoy and hopefully it will be better.

That's the problem with Linux, some companies are not giving it support. So best is to contact these companies and let them know you want a Linux driver or software.

Have a look at this thread and see what georgeg says about his solution:
http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=13453

I also found this info on the Xandros forum from monster_user, so try it if the above doesn't work and hopefully this one works:

1. Open an Adminstrator Console, or open a Console, and type su.

2. Type alsaconf, and it let it run.

Wow. That's pretty convoluted. Software that almost works. I already got my fill of that in the old days of Windows.

Don't blame it on "some companies". Unsupported scanners work fine in Windows. They should also work in Linux.

a7bats,
Looks like you could get to be a big favorite around the A/T forums.
Your information is strictly top drawer.

Just because it works in Windows, doesn't mean it'll work in Linux or OS X.

Oh wait, do you want to open an .exe file in Linux?

Packages are handled differently and drivers must be strictly written for an operating system.
Thanks to the open source community, they have developed drivers for most hardware through reverse engineering and help from some companies.

Anyway, I'm here to provide info on something people want to try out. It's up to those to try something different if they want as they're given a choice. for free or less than the cost of Win OS.

If you're happy with Windows, fine be happy as Linux isn't for you. If you want to try something different, then try it and continue supporting.

I don't see that anywhere in my system, or are you talking about the download bandwidth? I didn't pay anything to download it, I am sharing my file with others though.

Here's a comparison chart detailing how the OCE version is different from the retail versions:

In response to Marco2's question about Corel Linux, I believe they stopped samething with WordPerfect for Corel.
a7bats,
RE: Corel, does that mean that this ships with W/P?

Also, I looked at the matrix as you suggested and am surprised at some of the omissions when comparing the Deluxe with the Office models. i.e.Does only the Office ver. come with the StarOffice Suite? - and it appears that DVD burner is missing in Office?
...and on-and on.

No, WordPefect does not come with Xandros. W/P for Linux has been put on hold from Corel. If you type in "Linux" in the search in the following link, it'll give some info about Corel's decision.
http://support.corel.com/scripts/rightnow.cfg/php.exe/enduser/std_alp.php
If you want W/P for Linux, it's best to email Corel letting them know there are people wanting it.

StarOffice only comes with the Business version of Xandros. If you want StarOffice for the the Deluxe or free version of Xandros, you can purchase and download through Xandros Networks.
The free version (OCE) of Xandros and the other versions comes with OpenOffice 1.1.3

Most of the programs or capabilities that are missing in the OCE or Deluxe edition of Xandros can be downloaded through Xandros Networks. Some software is free, while others is not.
For DVD burning support and faster CD burning speeds, that can be accomplished by installing K3B and other programs. It's best to search or consult the Xandros forums for info about DVD support or anything you have a question about.

If you're interested in the Business version of Xandros, I think I would wait till they update it as it's version 2.5. While the other versions are at 3.0 and has newer things. Try out the free version and see how you like it.

Xandros is a commercial release that began life as Corel Linux. Releases are fewer than in non commercial distros such as Fedora core but they are regular.

No clue about column(?) summation sry.
