Yadayada just sent me an email for a free modem with a 1 yr service agreement @ $40/month. Already had their modem, so just called them up to get $170 credited. Didn't ask for promo code. They use the verizon network I think.

yeah, if you have a handspring you're better off getting the visorphone....a little more $$ up front, but for about $35 a month, you not only get data service but it's a cell phone also.

I don't think the visorphone has unlimited transfer. Probably uses up your monthly minutes.

I'll hate to use the visor as a cell phone, because of its size. I could imagine it would look very wierd to people around you when you talk into that thing. I would rather keep using my Nokia thats smaller than my hand.

Besides, WAP enabled cell phones are the future, not the big chunky PDA turned cell phone.

or how about... cell phones are the future of wireless voice communication, and pda's are the future of... pda computing .

I wouldn't try to call someone with my pda, just as I wouldn't try to surf the web or read news briefings on my phone... for the former, it just doesn't look right, and for the latter, the prohibitive screen size is the issue... and technology isn't going to make that any better, since the goal is to have a larger screen size to view pages on... but that would lead to a bigger phone, etcetc...

by the way, the deal is the exact same one that has been offered at omnisky for months... maybe yadayada is just a reseller or something... hmm.

i am going to get a palm. i am a student and alot of my classes are boring to me.
I think that if 40 bucks amonth also included unlimited cell phone that it would be worth it for me. then i could surf at school, and call during breaks, lol

annyway- is there unlimited minutes on these guys or what?

From the site:

"...
Just attach the YadaYada Wireless Modem and stay connected to the Internet 24/7, to get to the information you need, without any hassle:

No dialing up, plugging in, or fussing with Internet Service Provider numbers
Each modem has its own IP address for an "always on" connection
The rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery can last up to 22 hours

Here's what you'll get from YadaYada:

Nationwide unlimited wireless Internet access for one low price

...."

Sounds kinda nifty, though not the most cost efficient. If I can get a good deal on the modem and get the credit to the account I might just try it out.

i just thought, what if i could internet using omnisky or yadadyaydad, and try ot log onto dialpad or something like that to use it for cell phone minutes from a pda phone ... but still, talking into your PDA is so ghetto...i mean the darn thing is bigger than old motorola "microtacs"

The Omnisky service and this Yadayadawhateva both give unlimited times. However, the VisorPhone or whatever it's called is just like a cellular phone service. You buy monthly minutes, you use those monthly minutes... You pay more for more

Cricket Communications - Those guys are actually kinda intriguing to me personally... They offer unlimited local calls for $35/month... And since your ISP is local... Well anyway, I've been thinking about signing up with these guys and seeing how well it'd work with my laptop. I mean, my girlfriend is on a 1-year agreement with AT&T for like $50/month and she pretty much only makes local calls... $35 isn't all that bad. Course then I wouldn't get Omnisky for my Visor :-/ DSL, Cricket, ISP charge... No way I wanna push it further with another $40/month

Well, I know that got a little off topic, just throwing around ideas I've thought of... Anyway, I would seriously think twice before getting the VisorPhone... I mean, what happens when it's unplugged? Ummmm, I'd imagine you can't receive calls! At least it wouldn't make sense Otherwise, why need the Visor at all Cheers!

about the visorphone thing, Yes, you do use your minutes when you surf the net, and you do have to dial-up, which are definite minuses. But you can get one of their more expensive plans (depending on how much you use your phone, and how much you will be web surfing with your pda, and when) for like $40-$50/month, and you shouldn't ever run out of minutes. You can also sign up for free weekends, and other regional promotions that should keep your actual billed minutes down.

As far as looking ghetto talking into your pda, I agree, however if you buy a hands-free kit, it won't look quite as ghetto, and you'll be able to put anything into your pda (appointment, etc.) while you're talking.

I still don't think the thing is worth the $300 up front (and definitely not the $500 it will cost if you already have service), but it sounds like a better alternative to paying $80 or more per month for wireless modem and cell phone service.

Just my 2 kopeks.

I don't know about the newer Palm PDAs, but I know the Visors all have built-in microphones. The cellphone modules for the Visors have the speaker built into them, and make use of the built-in microphone.

The Mistrel Modem Rocks! I just hacked mine (OmniSky) to use on my laptop. Sweet. Now I can surf wireless on the Palm and my laptop.
