Freebird, I have a thing for tribute songs and bands that still put on tens of shows each year (after 30 years of rocking)

You'll hear both referred to as "the most requested song of all time." It's a complete lie. Whenever a DJ needed to take a crap, they needed a long song - they'd play one of these and claim someone requested it.

^^.

I really don't understand how there are so many people who hate both? How could you actually hate these songs? I can understand that they're overplayed and yeah, that's annoying, but actually hating the songs themselves? Yikes. I'm not a huge Skynyrd fan but I can definitely appreciate Freebird. Stairway to Heaven, though, is just a masterpiece.

The best I can say for Stairway is that it's tolerable.

Freebird, however, contains the single best guitar solo in rock history. The 14+ minute live version may well represent the greatest example of straight-ahead guitar-based rock that has ever existed.

You're citing nonsense as an example of "great lyrics"? Freebird's lyrics are trite and banal yet still far superior to the pseudo-intellectual nonsense of Stairway.

What is with people here?
If it's trendy, it can't be good. If it's popular, it can't be good. If it's not tech/math/prog metal, it can't be good.

Personally, I prefer Stairway a little more than Freebird, but love each equally. However, due to both being very overplayed, I can only listen to them when I want to listen to them.
I'm a huge Led Zep fan, but tend to listen to just about everything of theirs other than Stairway. I love Kashmir too, but don't listen to that song too frequently either.

at least Zeppelin tried to be somewhat artistic and poetic. last time i checked, that was 99% of songwriting and musical creativity as we know it.

"if i leave here tomorowwwwwwwwww
would you still remember meee"

lol, smoke another one Skynrd.

This. It's still one of my favorites, but then again I can still listen to Achy Breaky Heart occasionally too, so I might have some type of immunity to this type of thing.

I'm south of the Mason-Dixon. Stairway all the way! Even though I've grown just a bit tired of hearing both.

Ah yes, we can't have a Led Zep/Rush/Pink Floyd discussion w/o the dreaded "pseudo-intellectual" tag being applied.

The lyrics of Stairway are pretty straightforward, and contains some pretty obvious symbolism. Nothing especially "intellectual" - pseudo or otherwise - about it. Just creative.

Unlike Free Bird, where one gets the impression LS said "Hey, let's make a real song", and then found out... they couldn't. So they jammed as an outro.

And an awesome fucking outro jam it is!

Not quite sure what you're getting at here. "Trendy" doesn't matter, it's the nature of the trend. If blue cars are trendy, and you don't like the color blue, why would you want a blue car?

Likewise, if the current trend in music is, say, hip-hop, and you don't like hip-hop, why bother with the latest trend?

I don't listen to much music radio, so maybe I'm off on what the latest musical trends are, but you get my drift.

In this thread, we've been discussing the merits of 2 older, "classic" songs that are definitions of a particular genre. We haven't been involved in an "old music vs new music" debate.

Yes it is, and that's the only reason I have an mp3 of it.

I didn't even realize there was a song before the outro jam.

You're telling me that, "If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now, its just a spring clean for the may queen" is straightforward and obvious symbolism? Sorry, it's not. It's a clear case of "we needed some words to fill up this verse and wanted people to think we were deep".

Like I said, Freebird's lyrics are trite and banal. And still better than Stairway's.

If I want intelligent lyrics, I have Rush or The Moody Blues to listen to. Zeppelin isn't even a blip on the radar screen for great lyrics. Zep had a few decent songs, and they get points for incorporating a lot of Lord of The Rings references in their works, but really I've never thought they were anything special.

Take your time, don't live too fast,
Troubles will come, and they will pass.
Go find a woman, and you'll find love,
And don't forget son,
There is someone up above.

And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.

More direct, more applicable, more specific. Instead of vague references to an ill-defined something, Skynyrd actually comes out and says it.

Just because Zep couches things with flowery language doesn't make their statements any deeper than Skynyrd's.
