FreeBSD 5.0 Release officially announced

Scott Long from FreeBSD Release Engineering team has officially announced the availability of FreeBSD 5.0 release.

Improvements include second generation UFS filesystem, GEOM, the extensible and flexible storage framework, DEVFS, the device virtual filesystem, Bluetooth, ACPI, CardBus, IEEE 1394 and many more! FreeBSD is also available on 64-bit sparc64 and ia64 platforms. Read full email announcement here.

I installed it yesterday, and if anyone wants to know before they install it: the nvidia drivers work with it.

Sort of OT, but if you want to learn (the key to enjoying such a great OS) FreeBSD bluntly, please search for the username "freebsd" on the Freebsdforums.org & Devshed forums. This guy knows his shiz.

5.0 will go on one of the Sun 420R's at work the next week, will be nice to see how well the port works and performs, especially seeing as 5.0 marks their first SPARC-64 port.

Now all I need is for FreeBSD to get rid of IPF and embrace PF instead, that would truely kick ass.

Dont get Freebsddude started on OpenBSD. I think Theo offended him or something.

Would you be surprised if he did?

Besides, I didn't even mention OpenBSD, I just mentioned a subcomponent, and FreeBSD is already using OpenSSH, so why not PF as well?
