Makes you feel good when the OS does not cost several hundred dollars doesnt it?

And as for FreeBSD working with Windows, it does not have lilo (but if you have linux installed lilo can load FreeBSD). It has its own loader which is 2390342196834209342167987432 times better than lilo in my opinion. I have never had it screw up something that wasnt my fault

well i downloaded and burned the FreeBSD version 4.3....so it will then load like linux...i'll do it from cdrom set as boot option in the bios...then it will like linux install its own bootloader that will give me the boot option to boot into win also...win is on c: (d: is win storage)and i have created two swap partitions adn a ext2 partition for FreeBSD

and yes its great to not have to pay for it but better then that it makes me feel more like i am part of it...that make sense

Paying for it is fine (I am subscribed to get EVERY x86 FreeBSD release even though I havent used it in a long time), but paying $200+ for an OS is what I find ridiculous. But anyhow, FreeBSD uses a different filesystem than ext2fs. I believe it uses FFS like the other BSDs. And if you want you can use the FreeBSD bootloader, if not I can help you setup lilo. Make sure you have a linux boot disk if you want to see if the FReeBSD bootloader will auto detect everything correctly. If you end up not liking it or it doesnt work you will probably want to go back to lilo. I actually have no clue right off how to edit FreeBSD's bootloader, I never had to. It picked up Win98se, linux, and OpenBSD without problems.

mm...no i would like to see how the boot loader for FreeBSD works....and when you say

"Make sure you have a linux boot disk if you want to see if the FReeBSD bootloader will auto detect everything correctly."

there is no linux on this machine i was going to load FreeBSD onto...just winMe.

and yeah 200 bucks is prolly a bit much especially when you have like 90% market share...but open source is like i am working on my car or motorcycle...lol

lol...well they are kinda old i guess...93 suburban and a 94 z28...and i have a 97 ducati 916...but i have done mods to all of them...and most all of it myself...thats what is kinda cool atleast in theory with open source...it will allow you to do it once you are armed with the appropriate skill.
and dont get me wrong...its not like i am mcp or anything...and i am sure the amount of knowledge wibndows would demand to be proficiant with it is huge...but there is more of a limit as to what it will let you do to it...atleast that is my understanding of some of the differances between open source and windows

Try doing a lot to one of these newer cars, its tough without a lot of EXPENSIVE equipment

With OpenSource you can create any functionality you are lacking and want/need. It is a lot tougher to do this with Windows.

monkey i know your opinions on searching for done-to-death material but i didn't have any luck today with it. i just had a simple question: what is the difference between linux and freeBSD? what does each offer over the other?

thanks

For all outside appearances they are about the same. Command syntax is usually the same. Linux has some better SMP code right now, but FreeBSD 5.0 comes out soon and that will change everything. FreeBSD has possibly the best TCP/IP stack out there, but linux is not far behind. FreeBSD is more oriented towards servers than desktops and does not always support the latest greatest hardware. When customizing kernels, FreeBSD is a lot different than linux, and in my opinion easier. The licences are different which may not affect you. Those are some basic differences, both are good though.
