Well..."Freedom of Speech" doesn't really apply in the workplace...so only an idiot would choose option #3, absent some kind of union agreement or other contract that might protect the speaker.
"Freedom of Speech" ONLY restricts government action controlling what you say...not private individuals or companies.

Came to OT for dinner recipes and memes.
Instead got a bunch of dudes trying to start a "you know what grinds my gears" kicked off by some talking points their idiot buddies brought up after watching some idiot on youtube.

You ain't worth the effort...or so your wife tells me.

I worked construction nearly all my life...no one really cares what you say...as long as you don't stop working...although you might catch some shit from your co-workers during breaks.

Don’t have this problem. Very few of my coworkers bring politics into the workplace, and the ones who do are easy to ignore, regardless of their politics. The only people who should fear getting fired are those who would say something that would be cause for firing.

#3, though I don't talk politics much. I can pretty much do what I want. Work needs me more than I need work.

at work, you talk about work, and maybe someone's vacation or funny personal story. not politics.

I quickly change the subject to religion and ask them to tell their mom to call me on the phone she bought me.

Seriously,
For you kids out here,
Time and place rules apply to politics and religion.
If you find yourself in a position where someone is trying to talk either to you in the work place, you can safely assume they are an idiot who probably chews with their mouth open.
At least when you work in an environment where people refer to jobs as "careers".

Talk is cheap - I mean free ! Let them talk. We Dem's won. That is all they need to know to keep their traps shut. Next case.. They should also use that hot air and figure away to over run the Federal Reserve and spread some of that American Wealth and Greed around to the people.

Freedom of speech doesn’t apply at work and I honestly don’t give a fuck what anyone else’s politics are. It is such a polarizing topic that no good can come from bringing it up so why bother. If you’re such a hard-on about your political beliefs that you need to bring it up at work and make other people uncomfortable then you probably deserve to be fired.

Before Donald was in office this was never a problem for me.
I was kinda lucky. 2020 turned out to be a shit year for America. I got fired in early January before things went batty. Didn't have to deal with people bringing up politics in the work place. It would have been trouble, I'm sure.

It's rarely a topic at work, but covid certainly tried to change that. I dont say much, I can tell if I've said too much around certain people and I don't bring it up again near them.

What happened to the good old days* when people didn't blab about third rail shit in polite company?

If people start bringing up politics at work I just smile and nod until they lose interest and go away or talk about something productive.

I may, at most, crack a joke on the sly about current events with folks I've been working with for multiple years that I know very well (more like friends I work with rather than co-workers really) but definitely on my own level, never down the chain or up the chain.

*I am fully aware that these "good old days" never existed or that work environments were so homogenous that it didn't really matter.

Where i work, unless a fist fight breaks out no ones getting fired talking politics.

I will have a conversation about topics that come up. These are usually local & state politics & it's just that, a conversation. When i comes to national politics, when/if it goes beyond a conversation i just walk away.

Amusingly, most of my recent co-workers seem to have a conservative slant, which is an oddity in Connecticut. I think that they're just sick of their taxes going up repeatedly, and some of them are gun collectors who are frustrated by the post Sandy Hook gun laws.

But, yeah, I mostly keep my mouth shut about that topic at work. There are too many delicate snowflakes out there who will complain to HR the moment their feelings get hurt.

i say "huh" or "yeah" and don't respond past that

anything more than that is asking for trouble

plus i don't care what they think, and i don't care that they know what i think

none of it matters anyway

We sometimes talk politics but in general we don't get too deeply into it. Never had any heated arguments or anything like that. Normally it's all stuff we can agree with as well. Of course since the pandemic started since we only have 1 person in the office at a time there's not as much casual conversations going on. Some stuff over chat but not much.

Although I distrust both parties, being generally a conservative Republican in my views, I just learned at work to agree with whatever anyone is saying about anything political if I know for sure they are a Democrat, I keep it short and say, "I have to get back to work, bye." and leave. For me political conversations are forbidden at work and at the bar in general. Now at home, I like to scream at my TV a lot...lol.
