I want to get Freelancer but I don't know if I should pre-order or wait to get it a couple days after it comes out.

Been playing the demo as well. The game really is great, reminds me how much time I spent playing Wing Commander: Privateer.

When you play multiplayer and play on a someone else's server for co-op, does the game carry over your character? For example, does the money you earn doing missions carry into your single player game?

Here are my thoughts about the demo:

No matter how they try to smooth it over, it just isn't as good as it would be with a joystick. Some times it feels like I'm clicking the toolbar in Word, not playing a game.

The enemy ship AI SUCKS! The ships just fly in circles, then try to ram you. Lame

Buying commodities low on one planet and selling high (a staple in Privateer) is totally lame in FL. The prices are always fixed.

The planets are way too small of a scale. When I'm in space next to a planet, the planet looks like its about 30 miles across tops. Where's the massive size?

The circular gate highway thing that you have to use to travel around fast.... LAME AND TEDIOUS.

Basically, I say play through the demo first, and do some flying around and exploring before you buy.

Ohh yeah, and I HATE the fricken way to busy space backdrops. Ya know space is dark and black. In Freelancer, there's a fricken nebula or strange colorful gas cloud EVERYWHERE! Once in a while is ok, but when the whole glass looks like a bowl of melted neopolitan ice-cream, it just doesn't feel like space to me.

If you're hung up on using a joystick, I suggest having a look at this thread.

I think it's always a futile effort to convince someone to like a game if they've decided they don't like it. For my own playing experience, the demo convinced me that I'll have no problem maintaining suspension of disbelief and staying immersed in the game. I would prefer fluctuating prices, at least randomly like the Escape Velocity series (sprite based mac games by Ambrosia SW), but since the 'dynamic economy' feature was cut, I'll just have to pretend that the planetary economies are relatively stable, and one trader's activities aren't going to affect prices.

Multiplayer and single player don't mix - your multiplayer character is stored on the server (kind of like the NWN vault system).

Don't get me wrong, I don't expect this game to be a 10/10, but my Privateer style game cravings have been unsatiated for so long I'm up for anything that will scratch the itch.

The reviews should be coming forthwith. Sometimes I'll buy I low rated game due to the gamestyle. E.g. most gave Star Fleet Command I/II around 3 stars but I loved those games. It's all about personal enjoyment baby, yeah.

I love the mouse flight its easy to use and makes it alot nicer for those of us that dont have joysticks. And i didnt see fixed prices, during the demo i went to Manhattan where Boron was supposed to sell for 155 and it only sold for like 140 so they do flucuate, at least it seemed like it to me. And the space enviorments are nice, and i like the tubes, cause they allow u to not have to waste time travelling there on your own. and the planet looked pretty big to me fro, the fact that my ship looks tiny on it, and in EV you are bigger than some space stations so this isnt a big deal to me. Looks like a great game. i played it so much that i "beat" the demo by getting to level 2. Just hope they have missions other than search and destroy in the full version

so, anyone have a mouse "wrapper" or emulator that allows a hotkey of "invert y axis" so i can actually play this game without wanting to break things?

I played the demo a lot and have the full game now. Is it possible to use the saved games from the demo? Or do they have demo-specific stuff embedded into them and won't work properly?

Thanks!

this game has its fair share of issues, but lack of joystick support is not one of them. i thought the combat system is very intuitive and a pleasure to use. the AI does suck big time though, and it's one of the bigger problems in the game.

Started the demo and it really didn't pull me in. I felt as though I'd played that game before which of course I have going all the way back to Wing Commander 1. Will give it another go soon.

Does the AI ever start using sheild batterys or nanobots? It seems like in the demo, I just need to keep an constant stream of fire on them and eventually they'll crack.

One thing I have noticed is that the more a faction hates you, the harder it is to make a jump without getting attacked. The Liberty Rogues REALLY hate me, and sometimes it seems like my freighter with advanced sheild, 5 turrents, missles, and one main gun isn't enough. I sure am glad I upgraded from my dinky little fighter

I'd like to see something where you could have more than one ship, or maybe become a ship-dealer. That strays more into the MMORPG type of thing though.
