Freelancer Problems

Freelancer is a great game, but I'm having a lot of trouble playing it because half the dialogue seems to be missing, and I'm not playing some ripped copy or anything either. Sometimes entire cutscenes will be missing dialogue, others it will work, but its always the same for each cutscene, its not as if it works sometimes and not others. If anyone has any ideas for me I'd really appriciate it.

My audio config:
Realtek AC97 onboard
Turtle Beach Montego I (audio disabled in device manager, I only use it for the gameport)
Klipsch Promedia 4.1

I was able to find this online:

· Missing Game Sounds
If you experience missing game sounds throughout Freelancer then a different audio codec is probably being used rather that the one provided by Freelancer.

· Please follow these steps if some sounds and speech are still missing after installation:
· Uninstall any 3rd party codec pack or the Nimo Codec pack from your system.
· Uninstall Freelancer.
· Go to the following directory, C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete the file ?l3codecp.acm?. If there happens to be another file named ?l3codeca.acm?, delete this too.
· If your system is Windows 98 or ME, open the system.ini file located in your system folder; C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. Delete ONLY the line that starts with ?msacm.l3acm=?. In the case of the Nimo codec pack, this will read ?msacm.l3acm=l3codecp.acm?
· If your system is Windows 2000 or XP, open the system registry editor (regedit) from the RUN command window.
· Locate and delete the following key: \HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32\msacm.l3acm
· Load the Freelancer installation CD and locate the REDIST folder. Within the REDIST folder, double click on the file named ?WMFADist.exe? and follow on-screen instructions.
· Install Freelancer.

Doesn't always work for everyone though. It's a common problem.

I read a review stating sound issues like this, hopefully a patch will fix it(don't have the game, but am interested). That solution in Jedibus's post is unacceptably complex and will likely mess up a whole whack of other apps.

I did that little trick and it cleared things up, the game is even better now that things actually make a little sense. Anyone who's played around in video encoding, especially with the radium mp3 codec has probably had to mess with files like this for some inane reason. I haven't tried, but I'm almost sure this did something to screw up my abilitiy to encode high bitrate mp3 audio tracks in avi files, but i'll live for now.

I have a real messed up problem, in game some of the text is XML code and when I go to go through the first gate with king my computer blue screens...help

This is an old topic but I'd like to bring it back up. I'm getting this problem and the soution posted by Jedibus fixes it to a certain degree - the music is there now - but some voice is still missing, mainly in the cutscenes but elsewhere too.

Has a solution been found to this problem? I didn't find a patch for this game.

Removing all your codecs? What the hell. I guess I shouldn't have expected MS games to work out of the box....

This game is in terribly bad shape bugs and compatibility wise especially considering the fact that it was in developement for what, 6 years??
