Hardly.
Its a Microsoft game, came out a while back and is (sadly) probably the last good space shooter ever made.
Unless you like X2 and X3, which I didnt.
Freelancer is a term used for any pilot who flies for themselves and not a company, government agency or mercenary group. Interestingly enough, it would seem that YOU are the only freelancer in the entire game, unless you do multiplayer.
Anyway, where was I?
Oh, yes. You start off as a pilot who survives a big attack and gets stuck on a planet with some of the other survivors, not the least of which is your client who promised you a million bucks and now he cant pay.
You end up getting hired by the local stellar police and, (eventually) have to save the universe from destruction by an ancient alien race.
The story is kind simple and the acting is definitely cheesy, but the gameplay is excellent.
A lot of folks dont like it because you cant use a joystick, only a mouse and keyboard.
I actually kind of liked how well they implemented the mouse control and find it to be easier for dogfighting.
Theres a ton of ships you can by along with a wide assortment of weapons. You can even purchase cargo frieghters and haul trade goods in between systems for a profit.
That was the other part that some folks hated and some folks loved.
Your experience level is determined by your net worth. As you aquire assets and money you gain XP. When you level up enough you get another Main Quest mission. During the in-between time, you can pick up bounties for cash. They are all extremely simple and repetative, the only varitey in them comes from using new ships and weapons.
Because of its popularity, some folks have made mods for it. There is even a freelancer mod manager which is almost required to use for some of the mods out there. One guy went so far as to make about a hundred more ships and added them to the game, along with new equipment for them. You can fly just about anything from the Star Wars universe (even capital ships), Homeworld, Star Trek, Babylon 5 and a few others.
Overall, Lickens Enterprises gives it a 9 for graphics, 8 for sound and music, 6 for story, and 9 for playability.
Check it out now!
