Freeware Security Applications Thread
5th Revision

For more detailed guides on removal / prevention of malware, please see The Consolidated Security Thread.

Statement regarding operating system support: Please post all information in regards to Windows Vista compatibility (with specifics on x32 or x64) in the Consolidated Security Thread for any of the applications listed below that have not already been flagged. Vista (x32) and XP 64 support are only confirmed in those programs that state compatibility in their bulleted description. Windows 2K/XP (32-bit) support is assumed.

NOTE: Some of the information stated in this thread is little more than my opinion or that of others. Most of the information here is a gathering of research done by (in no order) MechBgon, Medea, John, myself, and others. Neither I nor they take any responsibility for anything that is stated here or that you download onto or do to your system.

All programs listed below are free to home users (and some maybe free to other groups):

Table of Contents:
  • Section A: AntiVirus
    Section B: Firewall
    Section C: AntiSpyware and AntiRootkit
    Section D: AntiSpam

Section A: AntiVirus

  • AOL Active Virus Shield
    • Of special note:
    • John's AOL AVS FAQ

      Pros
    • Uses Kaspersky Antivirus as its base
    • Automatic Updates every hour
    • Email Scanning
    • Real Time protection
    • Identical detection rate to Kaspersky (which has the best detection rates in most tests that I have seen) and should have the highest detection rates of any free antivirus product.
    • XP64 support
    • VISTA SUPPORT COMING SOON, will not currently work in Vista

      Cons
    • Registration required
    • Good for one year (as of now)
    • AOL may send spam to the address that you registered the AVS with.
    • Shady EULA.
    • Lacks some features of KAV, please read Kaspersky's AOL AVS FAQ for information regarding features removed in the AOL distribution.
    • Bundled toolbar, avoid installing toolbar by following mechBgon's instructions
[/list]
  • avast! 4 Home Edition

    • Pros
    • Automatic Updates
    • P2P, IM, and Email Scanning
    • Real Time protection
    • Better Detection rate than AVG (but less than Antivir)
    • XP 64 support
    • Skinable

  • AVG Free Edition

    • Pros
    • Lightweight
    • Email Scanning
    • Real Time Protection
    • Automatic updates
    • Vista support (x64 not confirmed)

    • OpenSource (free to everyone)
    • Automatic Updates
    • Easy to schedule scans and updates
      Cons
    • Poor detection rate (lower than AVG, but the devs focus more on the viruses in the wild than "legacy" viruses)
    • Email Scanning only works with Outlook (not OE)
    • No realtime protection

    Others to noteOnline virus scanners
These online scanners run via ActiveX or Java.

Section B: Firewall
(all are free to home users only)
  • Which Firewall is the most secure?
Please see this site for leak tests of common firewalls.

Section C: AntiSpyware

Section D: AntiSpam

  • Comparison chart of AntiSpam products (made by the SpamPal folks, it maybe biased).
  • SPAM Fighter
    • Free for home users only
    • Works only with Outlook and Outlook Express

  • ThunderBird
    • Alternative freeware (opensource) email client.
    • Vista support
    • Has a built in adaptive antispam filter that gets better the longer you use it.
  • MailWasher
    • Preview emails before downloading them.
    • Bounce unwanted email back to sender, so it looks like your email address does not exist to the spammer and they may remove you from the database.
    • Freeware version available for home users.
  • Spamassassin
    • OpenSource antispam tool
  • SpamPal
    • Another free antispam tool
  • Windows Mail
    • Windows Vista's version of OE.
    • Offers built in junk mail filtering similar to OL 2k3.

Put your system to the test!

  • Test your browser's security: Follow the tests located here. hey should tell you what you are vulnerable to and some security tips along with it. This is by no means harmful.
  • Microsoft Basline Security Analyzer: Test to see if your system has all available security patches applied and to identify common security misconfigurations by running this application from Microsoft.
  • Test your firewall: By running Shields up!.
  • Software Inspector offers a security check of installed software to see if they are all updated.

Thanks John, Medea, adlep and MechBgon. I could not have written this without you guys

any free av's for server 03? it actually is for home use.

I use avg myself, used to use norton, but I just tried avg and anti vir, anti-vir first, it found 2 viri that norton had missed, avg found 6 more trojans that anti-vir missed that where over 3 years old. (and I occasionally use trendmicro's housecall in case norton was missing things)

@lobadobadingdong

install antivir in a non server computer, then copy the program files\antivir to the 03 server, it should be able to run...

though some services (like autoguard) might be need to added manualy through registry export

What about asquared? I use it also with my AVG and spywareblaster and Ad-aware. It finds some things the others don't. Plus they have updates all the time. Updates are manual with the free version.
It free here. A-Squared free
This is what they say on their page.
a-squared (a-squared) is a complementary product to antivirus software and desktop firewalls on MS Windows computers. Antivirus software specializes in detecting classic viruses. Many available products have weaknesses in detecting other malicious software (Malware) like Trojans, Dialers, Worms and Spyware (Adware). a-squared fills the gap that malware writers exploit.
A-squared Free does not contain the background guard with the Malware-IDS which prevents any further infection of your computer. That comes with the A-squared Pro.

MS antispyware is free to all while it is in beta as far as I know

Clamwin is free antivirus for all as stated in the OP

The only free firewall I know of is the one that comes with windows - if you consider that free.

You may want to think about the following before trusting the health and security of your business computers to apps not based on their ability, but price:

How important is the data on the machines ? what would happen if a file was infeted by a virus and had to be deleted ?

How important is system uptime to the business ? What would happen if a hacker or a virus were to make a business computer unusable for a period of time ?

How important is user productivity ? If a machine is slowed down by spyware which would in turn slow down the productivity of the user, how would this affect the business ?

wait, how can you configure anti-vir to update itself?

Right click on tray, start internet update, yes, (updates), done.

You can configure it to where you do not have to click yes (or at least you could do it in an older version). Note that you have to do this every day or so to make sure you have the latest definitions.

Great post -- I love the very concise pro/con breakdown on the antivirus products. I've used all of the firewall products (and a few others) listed above, and I have to my vote to Sygate Personal Firewall. Aside from having configuration options that some don't offer in the freebie versions, the thing I really love about Sygate is that if you give a yes or no to the prompt that comes up when an app tries to access the internet, but don't set up a rule, it remembers your answer for the time the app is open, and doesn't bother you again until the next time that app is run. I have a couple of programs that I let access the internet occasionaly, and with any other firewall you either need to set a rule and change it each time you want something to access the internet, or be prepared to hit yes or no about 10 million times. It's a small thing, and yes it's kind of a weird thing to want a firewall to do, but it just seems intuitive to me, and I went through a lot of different firewalls trying to find one that did just that.

Mods, can we sticky this?

Edit: Looks like it's already stickied over in the Software forum. Still, it would be useful if HotDeals had a sticky pointing to it, too.
