I'm using a free beta version from Trend which I really like. Only one or two false positives and the same for false negatives in the last couple of months I was using it. I was getting really overwhelmed with spam before. Its kind of fun to see you inbox load up with spam and then Trend deletes it automatically.

Here's a link to the thread about it:

John let me know about a little package he put together that could help everyone here, it has now been added to the OP. Here is the PM that I got from him about it, all credit to him for taking the time to put it together and host it.
Several months ago I put together that uses noahdfear's smitrem tool & secured2k's antipuper. I included a ccleaner and a readme in the kit as well. They remove Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c malware infection and it?s variants, AntivirusGold, PSGuard Spyware Remover, SpySheriff, Spy Trooper, SpyAxe, Security Toolbar, WinHound, SpywareStrike, etc.

Rev .031 is now live as well with a few more additions and improvements including spam/cookie management, protection against scripts, fixed link to Kerio, etc.

Please see the Consolidated Security Thread for credits to the specific contributors of the Anandtech Community's ongoing war against malware.

Remember, this is your thread, not mine, if you see anything that you wished added or changed, let me know via PM and I will discuss it with a few other members here and it may be added with full credit going to you (for finding it) in The Consolidated Security Thread's "change log"area.

Enjoy

It has come to my attention that a freeware version of Kaspersky has been floating around under the AOL badge. If this does not have a "catch" then this could be the best freeware antivirus out there, as Kaspersky is regarded by many (and backed by detection rate tests) as the best antivirus product out there. Here is the thread. I may add it to the OP if the positive reports keep coming in

Wow, first free TV shows and music from AOL, now a good anti-virus program for free. Crazy.

AOL antivirus has been added after careful research. Thanks to Sid59 for finding it (thread linked above) and delta901 (of fatwallet, thread linked in the OP) for comparing it to the real Kaspersky package.

The new AOL antivirus appears to be the best choice for anyone not wishing to pay for virus protection.

With that Rev .036 goes live. Enjoy!

Thanks Supafly for bringing this to my attention,

The AOL AVS might not be the gift that we once thought. Some things have come up that worry me. The article linked below stated that the EULA contains things that can leave the door open for AOL spyware.
"If it actually does any of the things stated in the EULA, we would actually flag it as spyware," said Christina Olson
The EULA also keeps you from using adblocking software:
"If you have any ad-blocking software up, you're basically violating their EULA, which is ridiculous," she said.
In addition, AOL can send you spam email via your email address that you used to register it.
"We are reserving the right solely to send periodic marketing e-mails that users will have the choice to opt out of."

The biggest worry comes from the optional toolbar that one can install with the AOL AVS:
Adding to AOL's troubles is the fact Active Virus Shield's security toolbar is based on a product with a questionable reputation. An earlier version of this software, known as the Softomate toolbar, is flagged as adware by Kaspersky's own antivirus products.

"I don't understand how a legitimate company like AOL provides software that can be classified as rogue," said Aviv Raff, a security researcher based in Israel.

After examining AOL's toolbar, Raff discovered a flaw in the software that would allow hackers to change the toolbar's configuration options. While the flaw does not in itself present a security risk, it could be used in combination with other types of malicious software to do things like pop up bogus search results, he said.

Article

I would suggest that ANYONE using the AOL AVS register it with an email account that you dont mind getting spammed and that you DO NOT install the toolbar that comes with the AVS.

I have updated the OP to address these concerns and note the possible dangers of the AOL AVS.

I keep a freeware site with many of these on it - http://www.missingbytes.net that requires no logging in, no waiting in line, no popups, and two ads to help pay for storage and bandwidth costs. All of the software there is free of adware, spyware, etc. I simply mirror the good stuff out there so it's all in one place when I need it.

I keep MissingBytes updated daily, so you're always sure to get the latest version as well.

John just sent word to me in a PM saying that virus.gr has updated their tests, AOL's freeware Active Virus Shield is #1 with Kaspersky. From looking at these detection rate results (from a "zoo" of 147184 unique pieces of malware), it outpaces all of the free and nonfree antivirus applications out there and is matched only by what it is based on, Kaspersky Antivirus.

I just hope that AOL doesn't pull any sneaky stuff. As of late they have been surprising us with a lot of freebies.

Awesome Thread, but I think it should belong in the software section of forums.anandtech.com
