Free C++ Compiler with all the tools:

OpenWatcom

For those who don't remember or are/were too young to know, back in the 80s and 90s, Watcom was #1. ID used it to create DOOM.

The company knew that regardless of the quality of its product, it wouldn't be able to compete against MS and discontinued it in 2001. Read the history, it's pretty good.

Hi,

I'm looking for a good CD/DVD burner. Doesn't need to rip or anything, just want to burn data CD/DVD, and video DVD (single and double layer).

I'm used to Nero, it has a good interface (the burning rom part, which is the only one I use), but the bundle is quite heavy and I really only need the burning features (and costs money also ). As it has many bugs, and is quite heavy, I'm not going to support it no more.

I really like CDBurnerXP Pro, but lacks DVD DL, and probably next version (end of september as they currently say) it may get there, but on the meantime I need some software to do the trick.

Thanks

COOL. Thanks, winks is what I was hoping for.
The free version of fraps is limited to 15 minutes of recording.

I had forgotten the other one my friend uses for recording desktop actions to video.
Cam Studio is specifically for that and free.

For IM, I'm using the sucessor of Gaim, named Pidgin http://pidgin.im/ .

I know that IM software is free ... I mean, MSN is free, GTalk is free ... but this software helps me getting in touch with people from virtually any IM service/protocol without having multiple IM softwares around my disk. Centralized IM, and that's really pleasing. I have friends with MSN, GTalk, ICQ ... and this software contacts them all.

Does anyone have experience with this? We can use a proggie that will allow us to not be email throttled by our ISP - we don't spam, but run a business group, and send/rcv lots of emails....

i am not sure if someone wrote about it in the thread.

but the googlepack now includes StarOffice, a complete OfficeSuite. They also added an incredible astronomy program into Google Earth.

Great freeware drive imaging software:

DriveImageXML

http://www.runtime.org/dixml.htm

This programs NEEDS to be on the list. It allows you to make drive images of any hard drive, in real time. it is very similar to Symantec Ghost. You can browse your drive images to extract indivudal files, or restore your entire boot partition. If used this many times and it works great. To restore your boot drive, you boot up using BartPE witha DriveImageXML plug-in.

IMO, this is by far the best freeware drive imaging software. if someone knows anything better please list it!

And I forgot to mention, if you don't like backing up your perating system while running windows, you can put DriveImage XML on a BartPE cd, and run your backup from that. That also allows backups for other operating systems that BartPe doesn't support natively (WIn2K, win98, etc...).

Uhm, no one posted the DataBase Tool DBVisualizer?

It's now on version 6 and provides a way of accessing many databases, requiring only java and proper jdbc drivers (which can also be downloaded from the site).

It has a freeware version, and it's the tool of my choice since I work with many databases.

InfraRecorder is a nice free replacement for Nero. Less bloated but has all theright tools, including creating ISO images rather than burning to disk

Treepad Lite is a great freeware program (Windows and Linux) that is small enough to fit on a floppy disk - with a bunch of treepad files too!

If you have ever used regedit, picture crossing it with notepad and you have treepad!

It's a fast, handy program that is free to use. And, if you don't happen to have treepad available to open a treepad file, not worry - any old text editor will do! You'll simply have to root through the file to find the part you are looking for.

Hi,

One more to the list: Sothink HTML Editor

From the site:

Sothink HTML Editor Free Version (previous name is CutePage) supports code and visual editing modes as well as site management, built-in preview and file upload. Besides, it costs you $0.00 !

imgburn now has a build mode as well....the all in one solution for cd/dvd creation, ISO's, and burning.

Hi,

Some more software I gathered around, when looking for software to store my passwords. I also found some references on anandtech, but still I'm posting them here for central reference.

Password Manager:
KeePass Password Safe
Stores passwords for whatever you want (webpages, emails, window logins, homebanking, whatever you throw at it, really). Has a main password and possibility to have a key file for added encription protection. Also has a version for simplified use in usb disk and there are some mobile versions. Looks really nice indeed.

Volume Encryption Software:
TrueCrypt
Can create and mount a volume disk stored on a file. That file is encrypted, so any files you store in the volume are stored encrypted. You can specify a volume size, or select for example an usb disk to total encryption (haven't tested this last option). As a test, I created a 30mb file, with a password of my choice plus key file for added encryption security (you can select several files as key files, and any file, like mp3 and the like, as long as they don't change - TrueCript doesn't change key files at all).

Those are great softwares that I intend to use. KeePass for storing my several++ passwords I have to remember and sometimes ask for an email reset, and TrueCript for encripting data.

One day I lost a USB pen with some info on it ... nothing special inside, but it could have been ... now if it were encripted, I would never be worried about loosing that small piece of kit I sometimes travel with, just mad about having to buy another one.

Now only if I can find a way to remember the passwords needed to access the password keeper and volume encryption tool ...

We are living the digital era - one lost password, or one mistaken delete, and we can loose some very important part of our lives, be it hard work, or those unique family photos. Eh! Just be carefull!

grrr... faststone has nicer overall interface, loads faster and has image editing options, while xnview has tabbed views and doesnt default to full screen on double clicks. Can I make faststone do the same?

I would warn you against using Alzip - it is a atrociously notorious program in korea for making a stupendous amount of irremovable malicious registry entries without the user's conscent. If anyone cares, the company (Alsoft) are bunch of crooks that ripped off other popular compression formats, removed CRC checking and published it as their own (.alz: their proprietary file format which is supposed to be of their "genunine" development effort). Uploading .alz files to local BBS had been almost considered a public disdemeanor for quite some time. Just thought you should know.

Although I have already mentioned it in another thread, I HIGHLY recommend that you check out KMP - by far the best video player (plays music too, but I would rather use foobar2k for that) I have used.

I link to it in the first line of the post. I'll try to do a big update to the thread this weekend and clean up some of the older entries.

Ops ... the original thread link is dead, probably too old a thread?
