I nominate an open-source HTTP filter: privoxy. Used it for over 9 months, excellent, block out ads and pop up before getting to your browser. Very good logic for filtering, extrememly customizable if you wish, but I find the default to be just what I wanted. Very easy to setup. Recommand to many friends who are all using it, espeically for IEs which is too prone to pop up etc.

TypeAndRun 4.6.1. google it.
freeware. thank the russian author

personally for me, its a large productivity increaser.

I find it oh so handy.

I've said goodbye to a cluttery desktop, and browsing menus looking to launch X application for awhile now.

Its been really stable for me, considering me using it a bunch every day.

its list of features are great.

I would never go back in time without it.

I'm having a problem ripping a DVD, being side B of the anamorphic widescreen Schindler's List. DVDShrink reports a cyclic redundancy error when analyzing and Smartripper 2.41 just hangs at 94% when trying to rip it to HD. I thought it was probably the disk, but I got another copy and it has the same problem. Is there another program I can try? I want to make a DVD out of it. Thanks.

What programs do you guys like for converting video files from one type to another type. Right now I've got some MPEG's I'd like to convert so that they can be burned to DVD.

Oracle's got a new and <b>free</b> SQL developing tool. I've been trying out for a few weeks now and have been very impressed.
SQL Developer

For those who do any Oracle DB work, this is a very good tool.

It expires so it is not "free." I dont count beta software as freeware.

some network traffic monitoring utils

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/nettrafficmeter.html
has lots of details, uses more cpu and requires .net

http://readerror.gmxhome.de/
net meter, less cpu slightly less features

really simple, netpersec
http://www.etplanet.com/download/details.php?file=43
has the best simple tray icon info though, quick glance tells you if theres traffic.
much faster but less features. i prefer netpersec+netmeter. both together use almost nothing. netpersec gives the most at a glance useful system tray feedback, netmeter for the logging.

might as well toss in everest home edition 2.20, the last free one

Sitting in my dentist's waiting room a couple of weeks ago I pick up the May 2006 copy of PC World and the cover article is "Best Free Stuff; Cool New Downloads, Sites & Services." They never let me sit in there very long, so I scanned and jotted down about a dozen programs that looked promising (almost all, it seemed!). I've only tried one, Foxit Reader, which the article said was a nifty Adobe Acrobat replacement for viewing PDF files. I tried it and decided I prefer Acrobat - Foxit doesn't support the Control + spacebar + left mouse drag-a-rectangle-to-view functionality I've come to expect in PDF's (and PageMaker).

My dentist told me I could borrow the issue, and I have it beside me but I have to bring it back tomorrow. Hopefully, I'll get to investigate some more of the utilities and edit this post with more information.

Edit: I found the article at PC World online: 101 Fabulous Freebies

-the obligatory disclaimer-
I'm in no way affiliated with PC World, etc., and in fact I've only tried one of their recommended utilities and disliked it.

Foxit Reader is indeed a wonderful program, that is very light, and nifty if all you are ever going to do with PDFs is read or print them.

I would have thought that the program was already mentinoed, and I could have sworn I got the program from the last thread like this.

It should definitely be re-added to this thread though.

I'd like to throw these out there:

LogMeIn (http://www.logmein.com) has a great free program comparable to pcAnywhere or GoToMyPC, but without the cost. You can access your home files from work or vice versa. I forget crap I need to bring to work all the time, so what I do is just open up the programs, open up my home desktop from work, and email whatever files I forgot to myself from there. It's awesome.

Also, SequoiaView (http://www.win.tue.nl/sequoiaview/) is great as well. It's a program that lets you visually represent all the files in a given directory as differently colored rectangles, whose colors are determined by their filetypes. Great for identifying gigantic files clogging up your system that you didn't even know were there.

...uh, did you mean to post in P&N or are you just off your meds?

I imagine it's already been suggested, but the NetBeans IDE is a pretty good Java development IDE, and it's got extensions for mobile apps, C++, enterpise apps, etc.

Does anybody remember PCGrasp? I learned coding on that, and I really liked the CSD it used. JGrasp isn't nearly as good, to my experience, and I cant find a place to download PCGrasp anymore. Any suggestions on where to find that or where I can get something with a similar CSD? Java and C++ are basically all I'd want out of it.
