Please edit the topic summary so that people will look here for torrent clients isntead of making threads all the time on torrent clients.

Good Partition Recovery program. Saved my a$$ when an installation of gentoo Linux went haywire (restored MBR partition table without manual editing). Open Source too, runs on virtually every OS.

google for mp3directcut
I can even do fade out or fade in, and unlike audacity, mp3directcut will not result in a decrease in audio quality

WeatherMate - freeware, no adware, no spyware.

Also meebo.com, while not downloadable, is a website that takes the place of several different IM apps.

There's some extra stuff on that site that might be worth a look...

you can also get file lists with the following from a command line:

dir > list.txt

didn't see this one anywhere...

A program that is a Flash creator for amatures like me. Something that you don't have to know all of the code crap like in flash 8. And has decent effects that don't look to corny.

Media Player Classic - A very small and lightweight media player. It's Media Player 6.4 on crack.

FFDShow - An all-in-one audio/video decoder that allows players to play stuff. FFDShow + MPC is a lot better than any single "all-in-one" media player.

VLC!

First off, Media Player is a fine Media Player. Just use it if it suits your needs.

I am using VLC because I want to use my plasma TV to watch video using my laptop as a source. My TV is 1024x768 natively ... and 16:9. So, my pixels are not square resulting in the short fat person problem. VLC resolves this by letting me scale the output of the video. I have not yet veify it will resolve my plasma display issues, but should be able to skew the output as needed from what I am seeing in the options.

VLC - Media Player alternative (better!?!?!)

------------
I'm still learning about so no comparisons can be made by myself at the time. It does seem stable though!

PC Tools antivirus just became freeware and it's far more efficient than Avast in my experience.

PC Tools homepage

Perhaps you should add it to the main list under antivirus!

This should be of interest to those of you who are tired of wasting money on blank CDs/DVDs and postage. GigaTribe is free software that allows you to share specific folders on your computer with friends & family located anywhere there is an internet connection.

Basically, you allow friends to access specific folders (and therefore files) on your computer which you've chosen to share. You can even use GigaTribe to access your computer from a remote location (work, etc...).

It's 100% safe (128-bit blowfish encryption, no spyware/adware), you can transfer huge files (no-limit!) and it's easy to set up. For more info or to download GigaTribe (remember, it's free!), go to www.gigatribe.com. I'm open to any feedback or questions you may have, just shoot me an email at john at gigatribe dot com.

Just updated the thread with suggestions from Sickbeast, sciencewhiz, and midnightrat.

Sorry for the slow updates, and I apologize if I did not add your suggestion to the list. I have a reason for excluding some of the suggestions though. I want to keep this list as freeware alternatives to stuff that you would normally have to pay for. Unfortunately, that means common applications like media players won't make it on there. Of course, you should feel free to still suggest them in the thread.

I'd been trying to find a good multi-purpose freeware video converter for Windows.

Basically, I have all the codecs to play anything on my PC, but I want to be able to convert to other formats when needed (PSP, iPod, etc). I was looking for one app that did the widest assortment of formats.

Found this: Super

Review

So far, I'm impressed. It smoked through the 3 vids I've thrown at it.

It seems to have just about every video codec ever made and can convert between them all. It has default settings for converting video to PSP, iPod and a couple of others.

I did a post installation check with AVG,SpyBot, AdAware, MS Defender and SpySweeper and nothing showed so it seems to be 'clean'. It did try to access the 'trusted zone' but I took care of that with ZA.

Anyone else looking for something similar should consider this program. Opinions wanted.

Some other tools I've found that I thought might interest people...

Drive Image XML (ghost, acronis alternative)
Open Workbench (Microsoft Project alternative)
Task Coach (Task manager that allows sub-tasks... I'd been looking for something like this forever...)
