KMPlayer is awesome but at first very intimidating for a new user with all the different options it has! I don't like the video playable slider either because its difficult to see where it is to move it. Sometimes it goes to far back and other times to far ahead. VLC player has really impressed me though I haven't had to install any codecs, not even ffdshow, to get any kind of video to play yet. I am shocked and surprised. Usually I had to install ffdshow. So far not this time.

Does anyone know if there is a easier way to get KMplayer video slider to become more like VLC player video slider so its easier to see and know where you are moving it? What I really wish VLC player and KMplayer had was a video slider thats as smooth and accurate as media center classic video slider is. It doesn't skip back or forward when going through a video at all.

To recover pictures from flash cards... Photo Recovery.

I tried several different programs, but this was the best free one that actually worked for me.

This is my favorite MP3 player.

XM Play

It is simple and doesn't embed itself everywhere. It can also be run from a flash drive...bonus!

I wouldn't say MPC is "way" better than VLC. Although I do like MPC slightly better, I don't like it better to the point that I feel like uninstalling VLC. On my new computer, I decided to try VLC instead of MPC+ffdshow. I like VLC enough that I'll stick with it until it gives me some sort of problem.

The only downside I've noticed is it is laggy on pause/resume. That's a very minor drawback considering the major pros it has going for it. No codecs, and from what I hear, it uses far less CPU usage when playing HD content compared to MPC.

I've never been a huge fan of windows media player classic, although it does work fine.

I much prefer the interface of mplayer, specifically MPUI (mplayer with user interface)

It's pretty rare that you need to download any codecs whatsoever. Mplayer just has them built in.

Does anyone have any idea how VLC is able to make audio so much louder than MPC ? Like if you turn the volume all the way up it is almost double the volume.

on MPC: View > Options > Audio Switcher.

try the Normalize and Boost options and see if you get a better result. maybe VLC boosts the audio by default...?

Halite BitTorrent Client: www.binarynotions.com/halite-bittorrent-client
an alternative to µTorrent and Azureus. Hilite takes only 5-6Mb of RAM.
it's in early stages of development but already provides great features:

- Free and Open Source
- File selection and/or file priority specifications.
- IP filtering with eMule style ipfilter.dat import.
- Protocol Encryption support.
- Ability to edit trackers specified in the torrent.
- Transfer rate and connection limits (global and per-torrent).

Deluge (http://deluge-torrent.org) is also a great alternative, but it takes
5x more memory than Hilite....basically as heavy as most BT clients.
Deluge used to be Linux-only, but it now has been ported to Win and Mac.

I have a MyHD HDTV card and the software is very good but has a few quirks. I'd try KMPlayer except that I suppose it doesn't support what is for me the most important feature that MyHD's application has, being timeshifting. At first, the card didn't have it, but later versions of the software added support. It lets you turn on timeshifting at any time when watching live TV, meaning you can just hit pause (the spacebar) and freeze action. Come back and hit pause again and you resume. A key combo (or key on the IR remote) and you Rewind a configurable time decrement (e.g. 10 seconds, is what I typically keep it at). And, of course, it has FF. The worst of it is that dragging the slider is very iffy. It usually jumps pretty much where it wants to. It's a struggle to jump back 1.5 hours, forward and hour, etc., although with persistence, it's certainly doable, just problematic.

What I'm wondering as well, is audio utilities. I use Winamp 2.95, because I can use Trackmaker 1.2 to split MP3 files with it. However, it's got security vulnerabilities, although I rarely download MP3s, just make my own. I'm going to try Winamp 5.52, but wonder how to install it. There are many options.

For instance, optional components include:

Winamp Agent
Multimedia Engine
Winamp Library
User Interface Extensions
Visualizations

Each of these have subcomponents. I don't know what to let it install.

I also want to install Mediamonkey, and it too wants to take over all my file associations, and I'm reluctant to do that. I downloaded it just to add tags to my MP3 files. If anyone can comment on this stuff, I'd be be grateful.

Well, I just went ahead with the Winamp 5.52 install, choosing some components and axing some others, basically quite a bit of guesswork.

To my surprise, my Trackmaker 1.2 still works. I'm using the Winamp Classic skin, so it looks like 2.95. To my amazement, the equalizer works, which never worked for me with any of the 2.xx versions before. I thought it had to do with the fact that I'm getting sound to my receiver from my soundcard by optical rather than analog connections. Well, this is a bonus for sure. My hearing about 3k is attenuated about 50%, and it kind of drives me nuts.

I was searching for a replacement for Motherboard Monitor and discovered SpeedFan. It's a nice little program that will report your system temperature in the same way as Motherboard Monitor did if you set it to open minimized and add it to the start up.

SpeedFan 4.33

SpeedFan 4.34 Beta

Also, here's another program suggested to me called HW Monitor. I haven't tried it yet, but supposedly it's a well-functioning freeware program.

HW Monitor

'Hope this helps out anyone who misses Motherboard Monitor.
