Nice post and good on ya for not warezing.

For a download manager I use Net Vampire version 3.3. It's extremely simple to use, has a nice interface and is absolutely excellent for downloading files, especially with respect to resuming. You can even schedule downloads for specific times.

Here's my list, along the same lines:

Antivirus software: none!
Download manager: none!

File compression: tar, gzip

Office suite: I bought MS Office v.X for $13 from the school bookstore.

FTP server: wuftpd, but it's not actually running.

FTP client: Fetch, it was $25, but I think I coulda got it for free w/ student licensing.

Telnet/SSH clients: the ones that run from the command line and comes with the OS.

Image editing: Photoshop - Licensing program at work allows me to install it on my home machine as well as my work PC

HTML editor: BBEdit. $79 w/ student discount.

Java editor: Project Builder. They give it away for free

Image viewer: Preview, comes with the OS.

Registry cleaner: Registry? huh?

File compression: AlZip. I just found out about this program yesterday in another thread I have in this forum. AlZip supports tons of file formats and the right click context menu lets you extract self-extracting EXE's! That was one quirk that annoyed me in most freeware file compression programs. The context menu should be able to handle both regular and self-extracting file archives. I actually think that AlZip is better than most retail shareware file compression programs.
I think I was the one that posted the link to Alzip for you. Glad you like it, it's definitely my favorite.

I agree....

I use Notepad for quick changes, but I prefer advanced features over being l337. I like HTML-Kit mainly because it lets me edit straight off the FTP server. When I hit save, it'll automatically upload the file for me.

Thanks for the heads up on AlZip! I actually like it more than a cracked version of WinRar!

I already use a lot of these freeware tools . . . BTW, nice list.

HOWEVER, don't forget to check hot deals . . . right NOW you can get Norton SystemWorks 2003 (including AnitVirus) for $10 after MIR (or make a few bucks if you are willing to PM and use coupons).

QUESTION***???*** IS LeechGet "spyware free"? Star DL'er IS. (so many free ones are spyware to the max)

SOMEHOW, Zone-Alarm seems to be missing from this list as a "cheap (free) but effective" firewall.

ugh, I mentioned AVG and explain why I Avast over it just recently. AVG is still a good one though.

apoppin, ZoneAlarm is a good piece of freeware but I don't use a firewall anymore. That's why I didn't have it on my list, but I'll add it though. Also, I used the Hot Deals forum to get myself a copy of Photoshop Elements a few months ago for about $25 after rebates. With decent freeware replacements for Norton, it doesn't seem like it's worth it (especially with an MIR) to buy it. And finally, LeechGet is spyware free!

Personally I think once you reach 18 years and have a job you should stop pirating. Sure, sure I did it as a kid but software companies weren't exactly losing money since I didn't have any to give to them to begin with.

I actually have full, legal copies of Office 97,2000 and XP. Funny thing is I'm using OpenOffice for everything instead. If you haven't checked it out do so. I think it's possibly the greatest freeware ever made.

-Wether warezing or not, the author of this thread maybe inadvertently points out that the software manufacturers didn't lose or gain any money what so ever either way.

leechftp - old client (doesnt have any updates)used it in college, still works for me and is easy to use.
There were a bunch of good free compression software I think there was a list on tucows, but I dont remember...
f-prot antivirus - has a free version and a liscense version, Liscence version letes you auto update, I think thats the only difference. NOt to mention it uses a lot less system resources than norton or any of the others. I honestly believe anyone who uses norton and leaves it on all the time, doesnt know a thing about viruses. IF they are using the firewall thats a dif story, but for virus protection only its pretty stupid

Oh yeah and thanks a bunch for that reg cleaner, I've been meaning to do it (have some bad things floating around) but been to lazy to find a proggie

Like that justifies it?

I don't know for sure whether or not the software manufacturers lose money, but I still believe that pirating software is wrong. I know that a lot of software manufacturers get most of their money from OEM deals, but I'm sure that there are smaller companies that rely on sales to end users.
I, personally, would never pay money for certain kinds of software. In this sense, companies or people who make file compression software, for example, would probably never get money from me anyway (pirating or no pirating). My little quest for finding freeware is to avoid using software that I'm supposed to pay for.

However, there are certain kinds of software that are harder to avoid buying. I bought copies of WinXP Pro, WinXP Home, Photoshop Elements, Adobe GoLive/LiveMotion, and a few others that I can't think of off the top of my head.

Actually, anyone who would post that about any AV product doesn't know anything about viri.

What would be a good freeware replacement for MS Access? I downloaded OpenOffice and tried the db that comes with it (I cannot remember the name), but I just wasn't smart enough to figure it out.

If everyone stops buying software, companies are gonig to stop making it. The economy will not allow everyone to use freeware all the time.

I've always thought that companies that make commonly used application software (Microsoft, Ahead, Roxio, Adobe, etc) make most of their money from OEM deals and corporate licensing. Retail software still has an advantage in terms of support and sometimes functionality. This doesn't mean that we should go and pirate application software though.

Game companies, however, will stop making games if they don't sell well.

IF i had the money to stop pirating, i would...but since im 17 and dont make all that much money, the little i do has to go to car stuffs and HARDware...(since u cant pirate those) hehe, and i tend to BUY the games i really play...Sadly tho, i guess i could stop pirating and d/l'ing/sharing for other people, because among my ring of friends, im the one everyone goes to if they need some software, any program you can think of, its probably sitting on my harddrive waiting to be burned, only have one LEGAL piece of software on my machine besides all the freeware (ie, AIM, etc), i'll stop when i can afford to, till then....

So use free software, like the whole reason this thread was started. There's a ton of free win32 software out there. I don't play many games so I switched to Linux, 99% of all my software is free and I pay for the 1% that isn't.

I used to be that way too, on a 14.4 modem no less. I had a copy of anything you could think of, most of it I downloaded for no good reason, just because I could. Now, I have better ways to spend my evenings and bandwidth =)

Well, I'm 19 and I'm a poor college student. What money I do have, I try to save for food, classes, bills, birthday presents for friends, and some hardware for me every once in a while. I started searching for all this freeware mainly to replace all the stuff that I had been downloading.

You're right, game companies will stop making games if they don't sell. Adobe will stop making photoshop if it stops selling. Microsoft would stop making office if they couldn't sell it. If nobody buys any software, then nobody is going to make any software. You may say that "there's still linux and open source projects" but most of the people who particpate in those projects also write commercial software for a living. If they can no longer write commercial software fora living, people are not going to get computer science degrees from colleges, cause there are no jobs. People aren't going to learn how to program, and eventually, there wont be any software left.
