Excellent programs......

1. KeePass for those passwords you don't want anyone to find.....

KeePass

2. iSafeguard Freeware: This version is for non-business individual users. Although it lacks some of the features the enterprise and professional editions have it does provide powerful encryption and digital signatures capabilities, security is as strong as the enterprise and professional editions.

Linky

Enjoy!

Though, can someone tell me what an E-mail client is? I use AOL(Is stoned to death[With rocks, fools!]), so would I be able to put my AOL name into Thunderbird and recieve my mail via Thunderbird? I don't get it.

By the way, I've been branching off and using web mail now. Aventure Mail is a pretty nice service. Free, too.

Also, what's a download manager? I guess it's a program that removes all the Windows pop-ups when you download something and condensates them into one window/client? Not necessary though, for people like me who don't download much?

Lastly, what are FTP clients and FTP servers?

If this post doesn't belong, please redirect me somewhere where I could be answered. Thanks.

AOL has a built in email client, I believe. Thunderbird is like AOL's email thing for those of us who don't use AOL. I don't know if AOL lets people check their AOL mail through 3rd party email clients, so someone else will have to answer that.

Download managers are a separate program that download files for you. They can condense all of the download windows into a single window, and they also help you resume broken downloads.

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. An FTP server is a piece of software that lets people connect to your computer to download and upload files. It's like a file sharing program that ONLY shares. FTP clients let you connect to an FTP server to download and upload. I guess an analogy would be like a plate of food... The FTP server is the plate. You place food on it or remove food from it using a fork (your FTP client).

My mistake. I was thinking of another package similar to Ip-Tools that is free. I just can't remember what its name was.

I havent gone through all the posts so this might be a repost but I'm gonna post anyway.

MS has a affiliation with some of the colleges called ELMS for MSDN AA (Academic Alliance)

Here's an excerpt from the faq

Q: What products are currently available for purchase and what is the cost?
A: The following products are available:

Product Description Price
Project Professional 2002 (Single-User) $8.89 USD
Project Professional 2003 $8.89 USD
Visio Professional 2002 (Single User) $8.89 USD
Visio Professional 2003 $8.89 USD
Visual Studio .NET 2003 Professional - Full Install $14.99 USD
Windows XP Professional (Single User) $8.89 USD

Each product includes one CD. The license gives you the right to install the product on one computer.

When a student purchases a product under this program, the product becomes the property of the student. The product will not terminate or expire simply by virtue of the termination, suspension, or other interruption of the student's status as an enrolled student.

Each student is limited to ONE copy of each product.

Q: What am I paying for?
A: You are entitled under your department's MSDNAA agreement to download or order software through CD Check-out at no charge. If you choose to have CD media shipped to your home, you pay a small fee to cover the cost of the CD media itself plus shipping and handling. You are not paying any fee to "license" the software, as the software is already fully licensed under your department's MSDNAA agreement.

I am sure many colleges are registered under this program, and many of the AT members are students. I havent been able to find a list of the colleges in the program, but if you googled your site I'm sure you'd be able to come up with it.

Hope this helps.

Pirating software is stealing. There IS no other way of looking at it.

Hmm...I wonder if my sister is in one of those colleges. Cheap Windows XP Pro that I could resell(Likely on these forums, since they would be happy to get Pro for cheap and not care about a box) and use myself.

Just saw this...Each student is limited to ONE copy of each product

Ah well. I could still use that stuff for cheap though.

I have also quit using Nero and now use CBBurnerXP Pro on all the computers at home, work, and at our customers. It has yet to fail to work with any burner I've used it on, including DVD burners. It definately one of the best freeware programs out there.

Hi,

Looking for info around the web, I tripped a little app that helps fight spam. Searching a little more, and looking into AT forums, I found 2 more apps that help doing it.

So I think it would be usefull to add the following apps to the awesome list we all share so far

Link #1: K9
K9 is an email filtering application that works in conjunction with your regular POP3 email program and automatically classifies incoming emails as spam (junk email) or non-spam without the need for maintaining dozens of rules or constant updates to be downloaded. It uses intelligent statistical analysis that can result in extremely high accuracy over time.

K9 learns from its mistakes and becomes better and better at being able to identify spam. More importantly it learns to recognize what you consider to be spam.

K9 is for standard POP3 email accounts only. It does not directly support Hotmail, AOL or any other kind of webmail type systems, nor does it support SSL or secure authentication as used by MSN.

Link #2: SPAMfighter Standard (Pro is free for 30 days, then it gets down to Standard. Differences between versions are here)
SPAMfighter Standard is a free tool for Outlook and Outlook Express that automatically and efficiently filters spam.

Whenever new mail arrives, it will automatically be tested by SPAMfighter, and if it's spam, it will be moved to your spam folder. If you receive a spam mail that is not detected, click on a single button, and the spam mail is removed from the rest of the 508.889 SPAMfighters in 158 countries in seconds.

( Not an app, but more of an online service: )
Link #3: SolidBlue Spam Interceptor
What makes Spam Interceptor different from other spam filter software is that it's not something you install. Everything is done using a web browser. Once you have created an account, you can use Spam Interceptor from any computer with a web browser. That means your email will be spam free from anywhere in the world!

Which one I use? None yet, just found them and can't wait to test them ... I receive an average of 100 spam emails A DAY! Can't wait to kill them all!

PS: Thanks for other threads around anandtech, which lead me to the lattest 2 links.
