If you're a student, it's actually much cheaper to buy software. Many schools have relationships with M$ that allow you to get the software at a greatly discounted price. Even if your school doesnt have a program like that, as a student you are eligible for academically priced software from many other places.

I wish I was a student so I could buy academically priced software.

as long as companies like adobe or microsoft keep acting the way they do, i will not pay for their products, whether i need/use them or not.

nice post! i really love to give mad props to companies and products that deserve them, however i have one quabble... why not actually drop a coin on products that are worth it?

granted, i'm usually the first to warez programs that are far to much $$$ or simply not worth it (it's hard for us college student, even with student discounts!!!)

however, lately i have found myself spending money on program when i felt the developers deserved my cash... some examples of programs (that i can easily think of) that i've actually purchased:

trillian by cerulean studios
getright (yeah, i actually bought it!)
battlefield 1942
road to rome expansion pack
return to castle wolfenstein

now if it came down to it, would i purchase more of the software (if i had the money)? absolutely... some other products that i would have no problem purchasing:

norton antivirus (never had virii problems, but it may one day save me and they are always innovating with that product)
windows, the next version. why not this version? devilsown and corp key, that's why. by the next time the next version of windows is out, i should be able to afford it. okay, it's got problems and all that smack, but you can't beat the compatability with practically every other program in existance. 'nuf said
genius. if this program was completed and enhanced (development has ceased), i would be willing to put down $25 or maybe even $30 for it

something i would never purchase:
office! way too expensive for it's limited about of use. besides outlook, i rarely open up any of the other applications. hopefully i won't be purchasing office 2003 (as i'm beta testing it and hoping for a retail copy). i mean, really, how can a handful of applications cost more than the os itself? ug

that's my 2 cents... well, acutally, several hundred dollars

EDIT: spelling fixes a year and a half later

You bring up a good point, but I'm not saying that you shouldn't pay for products that you find useful. I try to buy games and more powerful software. I own my own copy of GoLive and LiveMotion along with 2 copies of WinXP and 1 copy of WinXP home. The fact is that I refuse to pay for certain kinds of software, like file compression software. There are so many free programs available and WinXP has basic support built in. In fact, I could write a basic zip program on my own with free libraries.

Kudos for finding a way around it.

I have a different opinion. I try to support whatever shareware I can. I don't look for the open-source solution, but for developers who are working on a solid product. I've bought winzip, getright, iconedit2, some shareware dev tools, ultra-edit, and a good bit of others. When I can afford it, I honor the licensing for shareware products. I hope to come up with a shareware program to write and make $ off of before I die, so I'm sticking to the community Iv'e been a part of since 1992.

As far as Microsoft, or Adobe, I'm sorry. I do have a valid license for nearly all of the software I have installed on my main workstation, but I refuse to pay 2X the amount (or in my case 4X the amount) to license all my computers for all the same products. That does in no way justify piracy, nor say it's not wrong, but it's my stance. If I'm the only person using 4 different computers, as long as I have the license for the product, you will never catch me spending $2000-$3000 for each computer to be licensced correctly (and yes, that's about how much software I've purchased in the past two years).

just one example of why adobe is Evil. if a company won't respect my fair use rights, then i wont respect their copyright.

I never saw Adobe as particularly evil for it although I didn't agree with their reaction. If I believe that a company doesn't respect my fair use rights, then I'll refuse to use their software. The problem comes from the extremely broad wording of the DMCA. Large corporations are able to abuse such broad wording to protect their commercial interests in almost any way. The DMCA could be interpreted to make crowbars illegal. I believe that by disrespecting Adobe's copyright, you're just perpetuating the problem.

hmm answered my own question. its odd that they give a "unlimited" trial version. why dont they just say freeware with donations? heh.

Web Browser: Phoenix 0.5 or any good nightly build

Download Manager: Freshdownload. No spyware, really speeds up download, also does resume if server supports it.

Anyone know of a good email freeware? I'm using Eudora Pro 5, but that's coz they haven't updated it for ages, so I don't have to pay for any updates.

Foxmail seems like a decent Outlook Express replacement. You might also want to try Pegasus.

I actually started using the Mozilla mail client today and it seems pretty good so far. The buttons aren't customizable like in OE because Mozilla doesn't use the Windows cool bars though.

The buttons are customizable, the whole UI is customizable just not through the UI (yet?).
