The University of California schools never have those kinds of discounts... I bought the Adobe GoLive/LiveMotion bundle for $89 + tax. Photoshop is still around $300, I think.

I got Norton Systemworks 2003 Pro from a deal on the Hot Deals forum for about $18 though.

We can download everything for free, 98,ME,2000, and XP, as well as Office XP, and NAV. The CDs are like $5 at the book store!

Cool list of software. The only stuff I pay for is games. Coincidentally, the only thing I use Windows for is games.

Everything else I use I use in linux, and is free open-sourced software:

Mozilla for Browsing/Email/News/Download Management
Gaim for IMing. Using plugins, support for all the popular IMs is available.
KVirc for IRCing (supports multiple simultaneous server connections).
Vim for HTML/PHP/ASP/Perl/C/C++ development. *Snicker*
Eclipse for Java development.
OpenOffice for word processing, spreadsheets, etc..
Gimp for image editing
XMMS for Audio playing (MP3s and CDs).
Audacity for editing Audio.
Xine for playing DVDs and watching video.
Xawtv for TV Tuning (I have an ATI TV-Wonder and a 19" monitor, no need for a TV).
X-CD-Roast for CD burning. It can also create ISOs from a cd or from files on a filesystem.
KDE's Ark for working with archives in a gui (I rarely do).

Oh, and I play Neverwinter Nights in Linux.

At the moment, I only use windows for 3 games:
PlanetSide - Windows only
Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror - There is a linux version, but there isn't support for my Nostromo n50 Speedpad, and I play this more often than any of the other FPSes I have with the possible exception of planetside, now that I've found it. I've got a wireless keyboard and don't wanna kill the batteries all the time.
Magic The Gathering Online - Windows only.

I also have Warcraft III, which I like, but don't play anywhere near as much as the other games.

If only I could get Day of Defeat to play in Red Hat, and some other misc. programs to run, I would be set!

*. I know there is a windows emulator, just never got it to work correctly!

This is an excellent post. One of the best I've seen yet!!! Thanks. I second Paint Shop Pro > Photoshop Elements though. Photoshop Elements feels like it is genuinely 'disabled' compared to Photoshop, whereas Paint Shop Pro can do just about anything that Photoshop can although sometimes not as quickly or effectively (i.e filters). Might that you can run some linux stuff through cyrgwin on Windows too, so that opens you up to a bit more software.

I'd also like to add that OpenOffice 1.1 RC2 supports export to PDF now - not sure how well it works though.

there's another pdf print driver on sourceforge that's free.

Slowview is a close replacement for acdsee... acdsee, i'd actually pay for... but only version 3.1... i do not like the newer versions.

did someone say Paint Shop Pro was free? It's like $99.

I don't think so. In fact, I think Elemental was the first to even mention it in this thread. I added it anyways under the image editor section along with a link to Amazon. Right now, it's going for $50 after rebate. A pretty good deal.

I've tried SlowView before, but I still prefer Irfanview. Both programs are very similar but Irfanview actually loads images much faster. It's noticedable when you're cycling through a directory of high res photos. Irfanview has tons of features built in and you can add more via plug-ins. The only things that I don't like are the ugly icons.

yeah, i agree, it is faster. the only thing i have against irfanview... it doesn't scroll w/ the mouse wheel entirely. sometimes it will load up an image that is too big and it doesn't resize, and when you use the mouse wheel.. it scrolls the image, not going to the next image :/

I find that, sometimes it'll move to the next image perfectly well with the mouse wheel and sometimes it just refuses to work and just pan the current image. I've never found a concrete solution

Still for free software its top notch, beats my old Image Viewer, ACDSee to a pulp!

heh, i couldn't say it beats acdsee because scrolling through images like so is something i do so often (showing off the digicam pics) that it gets rather annoying. Altho, I only condone acdsee 3.1 and previous... the newer versions.. bloat to hell.

I always use the spacebar and backspace to cycle through images.
Also, if you double click on the image, Irfanview will go to full screen and from there, you can cycle with just the mouse wheel.
I believe you can also tell Irfanview to resize large images so that they fit on your screen. If you do that, you should be able to cycle with just the mouse wheel.
