I think that productivity programs such as Photoshop and office will always be somewhat pirated because they are expensive and they are items that are easily fesible to pirate. What do i mean by that? When you install photoshop, apply all those dirty things and bam you have a working, fully functional copy of photoshop.

That's why I made this thread. There are alternatives out there that are free and will usually do a good job. Besides, you can get Photoshop Elements for about $30-$40 usually.

Actually, I think M$, Adobe, and other "desktop application" makers are doing pretty good on making programs where you have to activate them, like Windows XP and Office 2003. I am just astounded that Adobe has not came up with an excellent activation system yet.

In my mind, how expensive is it to go to eBay and get an older copy of Photoshop then spend $150 on a upgrade to the latest version. I paid $250 for a Adobe Video Collection on eBay, at the time it had over $600 worth of programs. (Photoshop 6, Illustrator 9, After Effects 4.1, Premiere 5.1) I also paid $100 for GoLive 6 and LiveMotion 2. Worth it in my books.

to bad where I live, there is no such thing as "legitimate" copies. Only pirated stuff is available. Pirating isnt termed as "illiegal" here. Though MS has come here and started a big issue, should be resolved soon. Therefore, I donot pay for 99.9% of the stuff I use. Dont think it is wrong either. Cant help it.

P.S; im from pakistan

Eventually it will matter though. Not now, but maybe 5-10 years out in the future, at least if Pakistan's governments want's to get it's country involved in anything technical, that is.

Look at India for instance, and how they prospered from this sort of thing.

If you get to that point were your going to attract international business then pirated software will end up mattering, because even if the companies can use pirated software without issue in your country, they will still be held accountable in other countries.

Not that I am try to chide you or anything.

But if you put your time and effort into stealing MS software (for instance) then your going to end up dependant to MS eventually.

Better to put your effort in learning and building things using Open source or local stuff so that you can aviod lock-in and eventually expensive liscencing fees.

Not that I dissagree with what your doing, if I was in your place I would be doing it to, I am Just trying to take a long look at things, a very long look.

A good PHP editor that not only functions as a text editor but as a relatively loaded IDE is phpEDIT.

Link to home page There are a lot of PHP editors but most of them are lacking one thing or another, or aren't being actively updated. phpEDIT seems to be the best all-around editor, too. They also offer a CodeBeauitifer that helps you clean up your code.

Some third party reviews that support the assertion

When it comes to text editors, you're going to get lots of suggestions. Some will suggest the power of Vim or xemacs, others will prefer the simplicity of Notepad+ or Editpad Lite. Personally, I strive for something in between the two.

Some discussions on the pros/cons of vim

Some good alternatives
Crimson Editor - a generally polished product that is designed for programmers, with syntax highlighting for all sorts of languages. It's very similar to UltraEdit without the nagware or $35 cost
Scintilla features collapse functions, i.e you can + and - your code, but it isn't a very active project, although it has some nifty features

That's all I got for now.

I'll throw in Yet Another Editor.
Jedit, very nice all-round editor, has lots of nifty features, as well as a whole bunch of plugins that can be automatically downloaded and installed using the built in plugin manager.

Ever wanted to have a decent PIM without having to use Outlook or Lotus Organizer?
bah DUM!
Mozilla Sunbird, similar to Firefox and Thunderbird

It has a calendar and to-do list. If you combine this with Thunderbird, you have email and an address book and thus a fully-functional PIM. I have been using it for a couple of weeks now and it seems reasonably stable (but not up to Thunderbird's quality quite yet).

WS_FTP LE at Tucows. I suggest using Filezilla though. WS_FTP LE is getting pretty old now.

SSH client: WinSCP3 (google it). Think Putty with a Windows Explorer GUI (or Norton Commander - it supports both). Supports SFTP, SSH, and more.

HTML Validator: www.htmlvalidator.com - they have a free version, and although it's nowhere near as good as the pay version (they have a 100-validation trial of pro), it gets the job done.

Image Viewer: I use Imagoweb for lots of my file-viewing where multiple pictures are in one folder. Supports slide show as well. Can convert images as good as any other.

(new category) mySQL editor: I use mySQL-Front 2.5 ... the newer version requires pay, but the older version is still supported, doesn't require payment, and works just the same. Apparently its supposed to crash on some things, but I've never noticed any bugs. Gone are the days of editing your mySQL database from a command line!

WS_FTP LE is the most archaic FTP client known besides cmd -> ftp. Seriously. It doesn't even let you transfer directory trees, or delete a directory with subdirectories. Of course, it lacks other features like queuing.

Use filezilla. It kicks ass. WS_FTP LE is too old to even be listed on this thread.,
