The OP's links and content somehow got corrupted by FuseTalk.

Checkout great deals on nonfree security products at the Security Product Deals Thread.

Interested in automatic virus removal? Checkout my experimental malware removal script.

The following is the portion that I was working on, it is unfinished and contains what I wrote several months ago as a replacement to the one that was corrupted, so it is not up to date either, but should be better than the legacy one that I have posted below

AntiSpyware Tools
These anti-spyware programs do not feature realtime protection unless noted otherwise. Some links to list of anti-malware tools may not work in Vista (see individual site for details)

AntiRootKit Tools
Rootkits gained popularity with the BMG music cd rootkit fiasco. Many antivirus companies have started to create tools with the specific purpose of removing and detecting rootkits by creating separate products from their normal antimalware tools that deal with them. Rootkits can be very complex and extremely difficult to detect and get rid of. If I were to get one (and presuming that it was detectable), I would probably just format rather than try to clean it off.

I have a complete backup from almost a year ago, so the information is VERY dated and some programs may not even exist anymore:
Freeware Security Applications Thread
Revision: 6.4

For detailed guides on removal / prevention of malware, please see The Consolidated Security Thread.

Statement regarding operating systems: Please post all information in regards to Windows Vista compatibility (with specifics on x32 or x64) in The Consolidated Security Thread for any of the applications listed below that have not already been flagged. Vista (x32) and XP 64 support are only confirmed in programs that state compatibility in their description. Windows 2K / XP (32-bit) support is assumed. When I just say Vista, assume that I mean Vista x32.

Disclaimer: Some of the information in this thread is little more than my opinion (or that of the contributers), a gathering of research done by MechBgon, Medea, John, myself, and others. Neither I nor they take any responsibility for anything that is stated here or that you download / install on or do to your system.

For deals on nonfree security products, please see the Commercial Security Applications Deals Thread.

On Vista and freeware protection.

Jetico Personal Firewall current beta release supports Vista.

It is somewhat buggy and in part has a rather bizarre double negative rules.

However, for people who want to "play around" it is more transparent than Vista's native two ways Adv. Firewall.

Avast 47 antivirus supports Vista.

Vista native Windefender does a good job as an AntiSpyware application.

Take into consideration that this for enthusiasts these early releases are not yet the most ?countable? pieces of software.

Windows Defender offers mediocre detection rates. In fact I'd put it on the same level as Ad-Aware. Just like the AV in OneCare, Defender is lacking in a lot of areas and needs a lot of work. Even though MS has deep pockets and a lot of resources, I would not expect a drastic change in their security products because it appears they are only interested in supplying band-aid security software.

Norton what? Please be more specific. Any Norton AV/IS from 2004-2006 is major bloat.

Are you behind a router? If not I highly recommend purchasing one. If you are then you can enable the Windows XP or Vista firewall for additional protection and zero impact on resources. Other software firewalls typically want to monitor outbound packets which leads to popups requiring you to allow/deny a connection.

http://spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#cybdef_note
Note on CyberDefender: We originally listed CyberDefender on this page out of concerns that the vendor behind the product was the same company that previously released Spyblocs/eBlocs, an application with a bad history of aggressive, deceptive advertising and illegal force-installs. Although we found no major problems in our initial testing with CyberDefender beyond false positives that were quickly cleaned up, and while the vendor itself halted the sales of Spyblocs and vowed not to repeat the same mistakes with CyberDefender, we decided out of caution to impose a three month probation period before we would consider re-testing and, if warranted, de-listing the the product from the Rogue/Suspect list. During that three month probation period we monitored the behavior of the company. When we encountered a spurt of advertising for the product through adware, we refused to de-list the product and imposed a second three month probation period. At the end of the second three month probation period we re-tested CyberDefender, again finding no problems serious enough to justify listing the program on this page. As we have observed no advertising of the product through adware for many months, and as the program itself exhibits no problems serious enough to warrant listing on this page, we have decided to de-list CyberDefender from the Rogue/Suspect list and can no longer regard the program to be "rogue/suspect."

Note: same company as Spyblocs / eBlocs

Indeed, and among the free ones, AVG Free (the latest version is 7.5) very handily won the poll at:

Thread polling for best anti-virus programs

I downloaded it the other day and intend to install it on my laptop and desktops. If you need really powerful AV protection, the consensus champ (definitely not free) is Nod32.

I'm also going to install the latest version of Zonealarm Free on them all (I have an older version installed on my desktops, now). I have used various versions of Zonealarm for years and although I've never tried a different firewall, I've always had a sense of Zonealarm as being well designed, very usable, effective and has a nice GUI and includes a tutorial that runs automatically after you install it and walks you through the program. Very nice.

Zonealarm does this but I've always thought it a good feature rather than a problem. The popup thing is configurable. When you first install Zonealarm it provides popups for any application or utility that wants to access the Internet and you tell Zonealarm whether to allow access, and you can check a checkbox to tell Zonealarm to trust the application in the future and not bother asking you. Naturally, you usually check that box unless you don't trust the application, which does happen sometimes. After a while, you get no more popups except for things you have just installed. It's not really a hassle and doesn't bother me. I'd rather know that an application is making a connection than be left in the dark.

Yes, I think Norton Corporate is probably alright, but otherwise it's said to be rubbish. Read the thread I just linked in my last post.

It may have won a poll of 33 total votes at that website, but you might want to take a look at the detection rate tests and compare it to AntiVir or AOL/Kaspersky (both free to home users and use little system resources):

http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82
Kaspersky doesn't appear to be free to anyone by virtue of the link from one of the above links. Free trial, otherwise $50.
