I'm considering an arctic cooling freezer 64. I'm just curious if it there is a reasonable amount of clearance around it, and if you are able to mount it with the fan blowing front to back.

I'll answer my own questions. There is a reasonable amount of clearance, though I did not mount it front to back- wasn't worth the trouble. My rig is so quiet and cool as it is, i'll just let the warm air blow into the PSU.

In addition to this: can a Freezer64 on a A8N-SLI be used in addition to a HIS X800XL? Anyone tried this combo? Won't the pretty big mounting screws on the back of the video card interfere with the Freezer64??

I got an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe, with AC Freezer64 mounted on the CPU. I also have X800XL cooled by Zalman VF700-CU. With the mounting screws and backbracket on the back of the video card, there is still nicely room in my system, both fitting (Zalman VF700-CU and ACFR64) well on my motherboard.

I quickly googled with HIS X800XL, and from the pictures it seems like the cards screws on the back aren't that much higher than the Zalmans mounting screws and backbracket on the back of the video card.

Please allow me to bother you with a few questions.

What CPU do you have? What kind of temperature readings are you getting with the AC Freezer64 (when your CPU's idling and when it's on load)? What's your case temperature?

I have a A64 3500+ Winchester and I usually run it stock speeds, without Cool'n'Quiet. I don't have/know exact ambient case temperature, but the motherboard monitor (MBM5) shows the motherboard temperature 32-33c while idling and around 34c-36c at maximum load. CPU is usually around 34-36 while idling and between 44-47 on load (47 after few hours of Prime95). I've never seen it go over 47. But I don't keep checking the temperatures that often (when I don't need to), so there might be some variation.

I used the reference thermal paste at first (for a month), but then I had to change the paste after I took off the motherboard to replace my chipset Heatsink. The original paste actually gave me better temperatures than my current Arctic Silver 5, which caused my temperatures to go up around 1-2 degrees celsius.

Thanks for the quick reply, mauri. I'm planning on getting a Freezer64 myself for my planned 4400+ X2 setup. Your results with the AC Freezer64 look great.

I used AS5 with an Intel P4 (3.0EGHz) myself (with the stock cooler), and the CPU temps didn't change one bit; they were just the same as they were before I applied the AS5 thermal paste on the CPU/heatsink.

Thanx, mauri. I now know there's around 1,5 cm space between a regular video card and the Freezer64 on a A8N-SLI (I asked the friendly guy with this set-up: http://www.biesma.demon.nl/a8n-sli/a8n-sli+freezer.JPG). The mounting screws of the VF700-CU look a bit smaller compared to those on the HIS X800XL, though:

* VF700-CU:

So, I'm curious how long the Zalman screws are. If they appear to be 1,5 cm, then it's a definitive no-go for the HIS-Freezer64 combination. If the Zalmans are less than - let's say - 1,0 cm, then there's still hope

I opened my case to check the gap and yes, it seems that the gap between the videocard and Freezer64 is between 1.5-2cm . I also measured the height of the Zalman brace plate and the height of the two screws (the highest point) at the back of the videocard: I'd say that the highest point of the two screws are about 1cm height (+- 0.1cm). And the Brace plate is about 0.8cm above the videocard. Not truly accurate, since I couldn't find any ruler, but quite close to the "real" results.

It's going to be a tight fit, but I hope it's going to fit in there.

I got an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe, with AC Freezer64 mounted on my FX-55. I'm running in SLI mode with two leadtek 6800gt's. It's not OC'd, but stock at this time. I haven't had time to play with it as am playing Half Life 2 {done} and Doom 3 {1/3 way done} on it. Haven't done any Temp. measurments either. Didn't have any problem with it fitting in. Then again, I'm running all of that in a full size Lian-Li Server case.

Wanted to add one other thing I forgot about. I noticed when I installed it, the base material of the cooling unit does not cover 100% of the metal head spreader of my FX-55. There is a small amount on either end not being covered by the heatsink base. Also the finish on the bottom side of the copper base is not as smooth as one from Zalman. It's close to the finish of the stock AMD heatsink
