Are peoply really this scared of serving in the military? You people are probably the ones cowering under a desk during a school shooting.

Anyway, a lot of good advice so far. And yes, using the marines as a leapfrog into the CIA would be a goal if I decide to go that route.

There's a fine line between fear and intelligence...anyone willing to serve in the military under this administration probably didn't notice the line at all and drove off a nearby cliff. And that's from someone who already served during wartime.

Recently I graduated with a BA in History and a BA in Anthropology. Ive thought about going to grad school for a masters to possibly teach college, Ive thought about trying to get a full time job somewhere...I have ran a few scenarios through my mind and to be honest nothing really apeals to me. I know life isnt meant to be fun and games, but I just dont know if I want to do any of these things; at least right now.

What I have started to think about lately is joining the Marine Corps. I was browsing their website and checking out what they offer and there is a few questions I couldnt find on there that maybe someone on here can answer. I know the military pays for college when you get out, but will they pay for my debt that I incurred before I join? How long would I have to stay in the marines? They werent very clear on what their sign-up commitments were. The reason why I am posting these questions here instead of contacting a recruiter is...well...Im afraid of what my parents would do If they found out I was considering this. Yes, Im 22 and should not be afraid of my parents, but I am just worried they would somehow be dissapointed in me. Also I have a GF that I have been dating for 4 years and Im not sure how that would go over.

Anyway I guess Im just looking for any advice, and If anyone has some answers to the questions I posted that would be cool too.

this is either a joke, or you are REALLY confused.

- voluntarily join the military during wartime? (ie: IRAQ) it's 4 yr active, 4yr inactive but they can call your ass back up. (i think) and since Bush has royally screwed over enlistments, be prepared to serve 8yrs active since they r sooo short handed.

- GF of 4 yrs, and you wanna leave for months on end for Prez Bush?!

- You chose a Double BA and yet you dont know what to do w/them?! shouldnt you have figured it out b4 choosing Anthropology? i mean it's not exactly a common major for people who dont know what to do w/their lives.

YES IT IS. you must get Married, have kids, 2.5 dogs, etc is all man made crap (like Religion). dont conform. screw what society expects u to do. walk to the beat of your own drummer. and since it sounds like u dont know what u wanna do anyway, this is the perfect chance.

My advice:
Get a gun, preferable a revolver. do NOT load any bullets in it. Play Russian Roulette. (yes, w/an empty gun.) Pulling that trigger will get you jumpstarted.

Good luck in your search for happiness.

The Army has a SLRP (student loan repayment program) that pays up to $65,000 of student loans. Only certain loans qualify, and it only pays so much every year. You would have to be in for like 15 or 20 years to get the whole $65,000 but it certainly helps even if you aren't in enough time to get the whole thing.

You could use the Tuition Assistance where in some states you get $4500 a semester. If you decide not to take the SLRP you can get the Monetary GI Bill which can pay about $10,000 total towards schooling. These things could help you get your Masters. The Army also has a program to help people become teachers when they get out of the Service, its called Troops to Teachers.

This is all for the Army, which I am highly considering joining, I'm sure the Marine Corps offers something along these lines.

PM me if you have any more questions

Yeah, seriously. What's the point of life if you don't enjoy it? Sure there are times you have to power through the rough patches, just like studying for finals, but it's only so you can get to the fun stuff (and that isn't necessarily retirement).

I wouldn't be too worried about not knowing what you want to do, it took me 3 years and 3 countries and a couple jobs in different fields, to figure out what the next step should be.

The important thing is to keep evaluating where you are going and where you want to go and don't get stuck in a rut of familiarity.

Forget the military. Go be a teacher. I think it would be cool to one day inspire a bunch of aimless high schoolers.

I'd really like to teach college though. Not to tread on your thread, but does anyone know if you can teach at the university level WITHOUT getting a doctorate? I'm assuming it'd be really hard without one (and perhaps damn near impossible at top schools), but could a master's degree or even just a bachelor get your foot in the door? I'll be getting a BS in engineering if that helps.

Yes you can sometimes, but it's much harder and you won't get anywhere unless you continue to your PhD. Except at community colleges for a one time class I've never seen anyone teach with just a bachelors. Even at semi-ok universities you'll sometimes find someone teaching a specific needed class with only a Masters, but they'll almost always be working on their doctorate.
