I'm going to buy a new refrigerator for my parents soon. It'll be a top freezer type with 20 to 22 cu ft of interior. The main complaint I'm reading in the reviews for some models is they're noisy. This concerns me because the fridge will go in the kitchen with a clear line of sight to the living room, but the reviews don't include decibel ratings or audio samples. The unit we're replacing is 14 years old and I can't find reviews for it so it's hard for me to compare.

In this segment, Consumer Reports recommends the Frigidaire Gallery FGTR2037TF. Oftentimes, by the time they publish a fridge recommendation, it's an old model so you'll have to shop for its current replacement. For your info, here's their break down:
Overall, this is a excellent refrigerator with
  • Excellent thermostat control
  • Excellent temperature uniformity
  • Excellent energy efficiency
  • Good at noise
  • Fair icemaking performance
  • Good crisper performance
  • spillproof shelves

Another model they recommend is Samsung RT21M6213SG, which they rate as "very good" at noise. However, when I shopped fridges several months ago, I specifically excluded Samsung and LG due to systemic reliability issues. I ended up buying a Whirlpool.

Thanks for the info! I should've mentioned that I'm not looking for an ice maker. We use ice cube trays.

Have you checked stock where you intend to buy it? There were some shortages recently due to a pandemic or something, where you might have a wait if you get especially picky about make/model. Obviously it matters a lot less if their current fridge is still working.

Most will have an ice maker, but you don't have to use it. I don't even have the water line hooked up.

You can still buy a basic fridge, but it might be smaller than your target. The Wirecutter has recommendations, although they state they don't do real testing like Consumer Reports does:

I did go with their French door recommendation.
