fried a Sapphire Radeon 9500 pro. Anyone good enough at soldering?

Hey. Heres the rundown. CAse was open, box fell off of adjacent table and hit a ramsink. Ramsink, slid off of the memory chip and shorted out a resistor/capacitor whatever it is. So now the card wont touch anything 3D and when you scroll on certain colors, it distorts the whole screen.

Its about a month beyond Sapphire's crappy one year warranty, so Im curious if it can be fixed. Im not that good at soldering, so Im wondering if anyone can be solicited into trying it for me?

I should have had pictures to upload already, but I wanted to get this out. Ill post pictures later.

If it is only a (resistor/capacitor) yes it can if you can find one just like that with the same spec maby radioshack do it youre self soldering is not that hard

The part in the circle is identical to the part that shorted out. But the one that shorted out is on the opposite side of the pcb.

You don't have much to lose by trying to solder yourself. FYI though if something shorted that sent a current too high somwhere else that my have caused other damage. i.e. even if you properly solder that component back it may still have probs. But what do you have to lose.

Man, you are probably out of luck There is no way to identify that component from the pic, but it is an SMT (surface mount) and pretty much out of the capacity of most home equipment. Take it to a good electronics repair place and see if they can do it for you. SMT requires fairly specialized equipment that most home "DIY'rs" aren't going to have.

and wahts worse, Sapphire wont RMA anything. They make their retailers do it, so if your the second owner and the original retailer wont RMA for the non-purchasing party, then your screwed.

In other words, warranty is non-transferable.

I for one am not going to buy a Sapphire product ever again. Not with MSI, ATI and Abit all offering 3 year warranties. And pretty much no questions asked RMA policies.

Do you still have the part that got hit? If so, you might need a resistance/capacitance meter to determine what it was, then get a replacement. From the pic, I don't know which one was circled, as the circle encompasses 5 components.

hehe. ya I guess your right. The part that got hit is the large beige colored component in the circle. Unfortunatly they stand just a hair bit higher than the ram chip.


DANG. New 9500 pros are $220.
