fried athlon xp ?

I installed my new SVC GC68 on my athlon 1700/ FIC Ad11 board.
within a minute couple of diodes burnt out. I got a new Iwill XP333-R at Frys.
When I tried the athlon, I don't see anything happening. However the mobo
works fine if i install my old duron (ofcourse after setting the jumpers). I assume
my cpu is also fried

What are my options now ? Can I RMA the processor/mobo ?

I've had this system for just over 2 months

RMAing a fried processor runs along the borderline of being immoral.

Not only is it your fault for damaging the CPU, you're hurting respectable vendors.

Perhaps you should use a shim next time.

You can get one for less than 5 bux now.

Hmm.. until now i wasn't aware that it was my fault :-( I did everything by the book.
anyway's, on the brighter side i see this as an oppurtunity to try the athlon 1600 at newegg ;-)

BTW, what is a shim ? Where can I get it ?

If it was an OEM cpu, your warranty would've been 30 days anyways.

Since his motherboard still works with the old CPU, I'm guessing the CPU just fried but the diode is still ok.

No...It sounds like the duron worked with his new mobo not the old FIC....


I think amd deserves the rma if you chip the core for their lack of pulling the head out of their arse and putting a heatspreader on it to protect the core....However why were you adding a shim??? I mean the factory rubber bumpers should have been fine...

At this point I agree don't rma the chip and chalk it up to learning...with amds install once and do no mess with...TOO DANGEROUS...I may think about the mobo as I have seen many in the past from bad QC do this and take a chip out with them....

I don't trust FIC
i owned one they are just cheep
and cheesy, no overclocking features
like they got their parts from radio shack and a thrift shop downtown and made it in their garage or something
