Fried cpu?

Got in on the Frys ECS mobo/2.4 thoroughbred deal last month and finally got to try and put it together last week (was waiting on new ram). Hooked it all up and fired er up, or at least tried to. Fans/hdd's/cd's all started but no signal and no warning beeps either. Its not the video card cause I tried it in my other comp (celeron 550) and it worked. Tried 100's of other things and then noticed something....scary. I put the heatsink on backwards so the notched side was on the wrong area, and the heatsink wasnt fully seated, oops.

Got a different mobo temporarily (local shop let me borrow it, a Asus A7V8X-X) threw the setup together again and nothing.....green light on mobo came on but when I hit the power switch, nada, zip, zilch, nothing started. They let me borrow a different one just in case the board was bad and same thing, nothing started.

So, its either the cpu or ram, everything else has been thoughly (and I mean THOUGHLY) tested. Did I fry the cpu by not having the heatsink on right? Would faulty ram do it? Its DDR 2700 crucial memory.

Ideas? Suggestions?

Hope its not the cpu cause I think Frys has a 2 week return and its already past that

You now have a fried cpu. Sorry about your loss but they fry faster than scrambled eggs if the heatsink is not seated right.

Why not go to the local shop and ask them to put the CPU into a system that has been running stable and smooth. If they just put in your possibly fried CPU and their system doesn't start up --> bad news for u

The P4's don't. You say you have a 2.4 Thoroughbred. There is no such thing. Do you know if you have an AMD or an Intel chip?

I've heard of cases where PSU destroy Mobos.

Read the second paragraph. He used Asus A7V8X-X to test his system. That's an AMD board. 2.4 Thoroughbred = XP2400?

the 2 week thing is only for returns and exchanges. i think warranty for oem cpu's is 1yr. i could be wrong but im almost certain because i recall seing those clear plastic cases with a white sticker that tells the cpu model, voltage and it also says 1yr warranty, its been a while so i cant guarantee.maybe fry's might give you a new one ....

look at the core very close . usualy if it's fryed , you'll see it.

Probably fried, but maybe not. I once Switched on the power to my PC with NO heatsink on the cpu the thing turnd on, then turnd itself off a few seconds later, I immediately realized what I had done and touched the core, it was burn your fingers hot. BUT the thing was smart enough to shut itself off before it fried, I let it cool, put proper cooling back on it, and it works fine to this day. Anyways, just thought you might want to know its not for sure fried. Good luck!
