This is what I think too, but its too late to pretend I didn't know what was going on. I texted him back with a somewhat chastising message already. Whatever though. Hopefully he's so embarrassed that I never have to hear about this again anyway.

Well that's the Pascal's Wager of friendship isn't it? Why not just do everything anyone you know asks you to do just in case one of them will give you incredible riches one day? Chances are you'll just spend your life doing things other people should be doing for themselves, and even if you hit the jackpot, it'll be money you didn't really earn. I don't want any part of that, so it will never be a concept I act on.

Just this Spring my mom got a call from a friend she hadn't seen in over ten years, needing some financial help overseas, and she wired them $1200.

As you can probably guess - the "friend" wasn't overseas at all. My mom's not that gullible. These people must be pretty good at what they do.

After verifying it was one of the 'big 3' (aka top 3 homies I grew up with), I might say I need more information but am not promising anything. Literally anyone else I would definitely say no.

That's disturbing and would probably make me glad I didn't help. I dont' think I would reply and would just let the person live with that as their last comment to me.
