My friend is going for an All-Black computer setup, He wants to trash his old monitor (piece of junk anyway) for a nice newer 19" CRT. He says he doesn't wanna spend more than $250. I think hes being a bit stingy about his money, and should opt to spend more for a nice, high quality monitor. Any suggestions?

But do not hesistate to recommend more expensive monitors, it may just convince him to spend a little extra...

Thanks
Jonathan

Tell him to get the MAG Innovision 19" for $150 after rebate, I believe. The new model is black and silver, mine is white :frown:.

I love my Sony G420S, but I got it on sale for $340 back when dell had 15% off and free shipping.

I got a viewsonic G90FB (19" black) for $204+shipping. (worked out to around $250). I am VERY pleased with it. Got it from Provantage and it was a painless experience.

My friend was looking at that, but I never heard of the brand, so I told him to go towards a more reliable brand name. How is the image quality on that monitor?

ctucker: Wow, expensive monitor, I would assume the image quality is supurb on such a high-end monitor?

qhunter: How is the image quality on that? I know viewsonic makes pretty good monitors, and that seems to fit his budget well, how do you like it?

ctucker, I have the Sony G410R, which is basically the same as your 420S without the USB ports and no built-in speaker. I'm running mine with ATI 8500 at 1600x1200x85Hz and text is sharp. Even higher resolutions are still clear but things are a little too small. Don't expect to find these higher quality monitors in retail stores. You have to order them online. Retail stores only carry lower end models.

The image quality is crystal clear. I haven't had any problems with this monitor and I highly recommend it but if you're looking to spend more money then by alll means, definitely go with the Sony.

I have a 420GS that I consider one of the best monitor's I've ever purchased. It's currently on the Wife's PC.

Tell him to suck it up and get a NEC/Mitsubishi FE1250+ It's a monster monitor for the money but it definately won't fit in a 250 budget.

In my humble opinion money spent on a monitor is the best investment you can make in a PC. A good one won't go obsolete and it's "the thing you look at". Don't pinch pennies on a monitor.

Yes, the G420S is very clear.. I think it's worth every penny. If that dell deal hadn't been running, it would have cost ~$400 shipped from a reputable dealer (yeah, some run cheaper.. but I wouldn't want to order something like this from a company with a so-so reseller rating). Even at $400, I still think it would be worth it.

I've really liked my G420s too.

But starting this weekend, it whines when displaying anything at 1600x1200 no matter the refresh rate. Worst of all, there's a small scratch on it, so Sony wants to charge me an insane ammount to send me another one on warranty.

Mag has been around for a while. Like most companies they make some good and some lower end. My wife has a Mag Trinitron FD from them and it's very sharp and has bright colors. I'm not sure about the one listed above though. A Mag 19" for $150 (even if it's a lower end model) is pretty good.

BTW, where can you get one for $150 after rebate? What model?

My NEC E1100 is starting to act up and while I like the 21", I can't justify spending that much.

I wouldn't recommend the SyncMaster 955DF if you're looking at that. My new one has some annoying problems.

Image quality on my g90fb is fabulous. I keep it at 1024x768 and graphics and text are both sharp at 80refresh. it looks good at 1600x1200 too but that's too small for my aging eyes. It's nice too look at too. my wife even loves it and she's very hard too please. Games all look good ...even Nascar 2002 which is a killer. It's hard too imagine doing much better even for lots more money.

The menu is not quite as user friendly as my old gateway but it is quite manageable.

Absolutely DO NOT buy the MAG innovision. I bought one and resolution was very blurry over 1024x768. I brought the monitor back and exchanged it for another exact same model. Brought it home and WALLA!! Still blurry. So the monitors arent bad, just cheap and you get what you pay for. I did bring this second monitor back to the store and instead picked up the ViewSonic A9f+ 19 inch. I made them hook it up at the store to a display computer and it was very clear and clean all the way up to 1600x1200. I love it.
It was 279.00 and they offered a 50.00 mail in rebate. So it falls into your friends sub 250.00 area. Very happy with it. Heed my warning about MAG though.

Good Luck..

If he has an Ati 8500 Retail card, tell him not to buy the Princeton 19" true flat. the Radeon won't recognise it correctly as a CRT display but a YbPbr type, and it will be a tranparent Green color.
