Hi, friend of mine online is having some issues, for a while now, and I'm not sure where to go from here to help him.

He gets random crashes, seemingly to be related to certain programs and/or websites (crunchyroll, newegg to name a couple). He keeps regular dust maintnance, and his temps at idle are mid 20's-30.

He says memtest has given him the thumbs up as well.

Unfortunately I can't answer specifics about his system, so I'm gonna point him here and force him to finally talk to you guys! I'm just not sure where to go from here if it's a software/driver issue.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give him.

I'm the friend.
Yeah so down to it i suppose.
So one day i updated flash player. And every since then my system has been experiencing freezing. Sometimes it is periodic, like it last 10 seconds then is good for a minute then a quick freeze. that is a relatively new problem mind you. the main problem i have been experiencing is a system hang, then freeze when i try to enter into task manager (via crtl+alt+delete prompt, oddly enough shift+ctrl+esc does nothing to cause it to freeze entirely but also does not enter the task manager).
So solutions, i have updated my drivers, cleaned them with Driver Fusion and then reinstalled them, i have cleaned my registry with CCleaner, checked for malware with Superantivirus and Malwarebytes, cleaned off flashplayer and reinstalled it, disabled firefox plugins (btw Firefox is the browser i am currently using) and ran a CHKDSK and preformed several memory tests, oh and i defragged using Smart Defrag. To start anyways. but mostly i am just trying to find an error message or some sort of error id to go on here, but nothing seems to correlate with my problems. Minitoolbox lists errors but nothing links up with when the system freezes. Now i can go for long stretches of time without system freezes mostly by staying off certains sites, (i.e. Crunchyroll.com, for some reason) but the system can freeze at other times but mostly it stutters, in fact the only time it froze in the last few months since the problem started without me going to Crunchyroll.com at some point before the freeze is on maybe two occasion. once when i was opening Songbird (shitty media player that i had been using to sync podcasts to my mp3 play. i have since gone back to WMP) and possibly once when i went to Newegg.com and experienced a freeze while on that site. though only the time i used songbird could i actually confirm i did not go to crunchyroll.com. So at this point, if i don't go to Crunchyroll.com (i have yet to retry Newegg.com)
So i guess what i am saying is at this point, if i stay off those two sites i seem to not experience freezing. Still, i have a feeling this is indicative of a more serious problem (the system stuttering freezing periodically and such worries me the most, as i started to experience this after i installed Music Creator 8 although, again it does not seem to happen unless i am on Crunchyroll.com) or in the very least a software conflict that can be resolved.

Try uninstalling flash and see if you still have problems. http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html

I would run Memtest86 over night. Just a few scans won't tell you anything. If it finds bad memory then remove all sticks and test one at a time every night.

One more thing. Before ever running Malwarebytes run Rkill first and I would run those in safe mode.

that link is broke for some reason, he says he's tried a clean flash install a few times though.

now it works, that's odd :/

Ok so i ran the uninstaller this time and made sure everything was closed as to not cause conflicts. Followed the instructions to the letter then reinstalled the flash drivers. Now to do the other things you mentioned. just downloaded Rkill, will run it in safe mode and then run Memtest86 over night as i'm going to bed. Thanks for the help so far.

Ok, new developments today.
First after brief system-lock, where the sound just gets stuck for 10 seconds, sounding very much horrific and you can't do anything but then everything seems fine (third time experiencing such a phenomenon). I run Speccy and see my first graphics card running hot at 83ºc, a whole 40º above where it runs normally with just Firefox, Steam, Zonealarm and Flashplayer in use running two displays. This prompts me to check my NVIDA Control Panel. and thus deciding to trying some options. One of which was to enable SLI. This then shuts down both displays, and most importantly you can hear the system's fan speeding up to it's highest setting and apparently hanging. Thus forcing a system cold boot and then manually turning back on my second display.
So what is causing it to freeze for ten seconds and then seemingly cause my graphics card to work harder? Would be just my first question.

Rkill came up empty, forgot to mention, and the memory tested good also forgot. And yes i do regular dusting in there to keep the dust from getting to clogged up.
I did use Drive Sweeper to clean the drivers and install the latest. And i will do this again on your suggestion. I have not tried running the system without flash. That i will try after i install the drivers. Thanks

Ok, so i uninstalled my the graphics card driver using Driver Fusion (which i had upgrade from Driver Sweeper and thanks to the link i may go back to). And all seemed ok for a bit (read several days without incident, staying away from Crunchyroll.com. Then it happened just a few minutes ago, pause then total freeze this time, requiring a manual restart.

This time i do have Event Viewer Errors however, these may or may not be part of the problem as i have not seen these before and believe they may have something to do with my driver update (the time in which these were logged would seem to be around when the system locked up, though i was away making a sandwich at the time):

The service is called NVIDIA Streamer Service and i immediately turned that service off (as i am certain i do not use the service and it would get in the possible way of further analysis). However that is a relatively new service with the update and the system freeze issue is identical to what has been happening. So, it very likely not the cause of the system freeze, or working in conjunction with whatever is causing my system to randomly freeze.

The biggest problem i am having is getting an error somewhere just so i can identify what is wrong. I keep waiting for it to freeze again so i can try different things.

It's a hugely frustrating problem.

Oh, no doubt, lol. but i was saying i think my problem is deeper than that. I did turn off the streaming service. should i be turning anything else off. Also, one other anomoly i am seeing is about 8 NVIDIA High Definition Audios listed under my sound card in Speccy (again not to distract from my system freezing problem.):

Are you using sound over HDMI? If not, go ahead and disable all of those NVIDIA High Definition Audio for the time being and see if this cures the problem.

From there, you can uninstall them (disable, reboot into safe mode, make sure still disabled in safe mode, uninstall, run CCleaner or the like, reboot into normal mode).

There are several mentions of this causing BSOD and random crashes on the net dating back to 2010. Your stuttering may be a symptom of that without the OS actually halting due the error and just resuming if TDR is disabled. Check that setting as well (see here.)

Ok so i have been having this problem as well. My card recovers from a crash occasionally and then all is fine for a bit. I am not sure if they are connected but i would like to sort this out since we've identified it. Slight problem, i do not have NVIDIA® Nsight™ Development Platform, Visual Studio Edition 2.2 So i have no idea how to set the TDR.

[Edit] I set out to disable all instances NVIDIA High Definition Audio and i am only showing one instance and it is already disabled. How would i go about uninstalling the seemingly 8 versions that theoretically should be disabled?

I usually like to hang back myself on updates for my NVIDIA graphics cards as the newer updates tend to be spotty in performance and seem to cause more harm than they fix. But as i have been having serious system crashes i have been forced to update them. I will say, if you can scroll up, it is starting to look like this is all because i have updated my graphics cards with regularity. So no, so far i can't recommend it, lol.

It wouldn't hurt to pull and uninstall non-essential cards until you sort this out (sound card).

Do you have another video card to test? Anything will work, even onboard video.

I would love to do that. It seems like there are way too many competing sound cards. Speccy gives me a list of what is installed but the only actual sound card i have is the Creative X-Fi Audio Processor (WDM). So why do i need Realtek and NVIDIA High Definition Audio if the have nothing to do with my actual sound card?Better question how can i confirm there are 8 versions running of NVIDIA High Definition Audio and uninstall them?As far as getting a graphics card to test, i do not have any at my disposal. Also i have dual graphics cards if that makes any difference.

[Edit] To clarify, i only have the one physical sound card.

[UPDATE] Ok, so i am an idiot. I went into the Device Manager as opposed to the Sound options and sure enough i found 8 NVIDIA High Definition Audio and 1 instance of NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (Wave Extensible) (WDM) which i disabled. I have also determined Realtek High Definition Audio is currently what i am using for HD sound.

Should i uninstall NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (Wave Extensible) (WDM) when i go to uninstall the rest of the lot?
