She had a destination in Europe and there was no way I was going to spend $2k to go for the week. We're not that close of friends. So they had a reception in a neighborhood clubhouse. It was a Halloween party to boot! I never got around to buying a wedding gift. Do I suck as a friend? I haven't talked to them in over a year actually.

So do you buy a gift?

So the party was last Halloween as in 2005?

Yeah. I know I suck. Some people say it's not a big deal because there wasn't really a big reception and I didn't go to the wedding.

So they basically put something together so they could collect gifts?

Were you good friends at some point? If so, I would have gotten them something at least factoring in maybe how much they had to spend to have the party, which if it wasn't much, then I'd question it too.

We would go out once in a while.

I think the party must've cost like $1000 maybe. There were finger foods and miller lite. And everyone dressed up in costumes.

A destination wedding is when you take a trip somewhere and get married on the trip.
I think they are kind of stupid.

speak for yourself... until you realize the craziness that goes into planning a wedding... you will have no idea how wonderful they are.
Destination weddings are becoming very popular for many couples who have large and small families that want an intimate wedding someplace other than a hall and church where they live.

Anyways, op, its kind of too late now to get a gift. I would see it as more of a slap in the face if you sent something.
If they have kids later on, be the first to send a gift then if you want to make up for it.

what makes them stupid? it can make things much easier on the couple. my fiance wishes we could've now. we have a guest list of 275ish and 220 is family! so we don't get to invite that many friends.

I am speaking for myself. I have been married for 10 years so I know exactly what goes into planning a wedding. Having a destination wedding means that many of your friends, unless they have a lot of spare money, will be unable to attend. Having a destination wedding can be a hardship for family members who are not well off financially. They are obligated to go because they are family so they may go into debt to be able to go to the wedding. A friend of mine just recently went to his brothers destination in Mexico. That means he had to fly himself, his wife and their four children there for the wedding. I asked him about it and he said he would have gladly given them a thousand dollar wedding gift rather than having to fly everyone to Mexico. Maybe both of your families are rich so money is not an issue.
You don't have to travel a thousand or more miles to have an intimate wedding.
Besides, a trip is what the honeymoon is for.

It's the right thing to do in some situations. If you have a large family it might not be the best decision. A good friend of mine got married in Cancun last year and I was the best man. He's not very close w his family and she has a small family. It was only about 10 of us down there and that was all friends, no family. It was a helluva lot easier for them to plan it and the people that went had a great time. I told them they needed to have a small reception when they got back but they never did.
