I work (well, worked...) with this guy who hasn't really cared about his job for several years and has a very tainted view of our company for various reasons. He never really did anything, takes 3 hour lunches, plays games for hour on end on his workstation, and just generally was a crappy employee. Well, last year he just didn't show up one Monday and apparently called in to say he had to leave the state last minute to attend to some family business.... for six weeks. Anyway, after he gets back, he tells me in confidence that he was really working a higher paying job as a consultant and made a bunch of money. I find out through the grape vine that he pretty much tells everyone the same story.... so really it's no damned secret at all. Anyway, he goes back to his normal lack of caring and looking for a better job. Fast forward to two weeks ago... he tells me he just signed on another position at another company and will be gone by weeks end. Monday comes around and he's not around. I hear that he called the boss and said his father was sick and he had to go on long term leave to care for him..... yet his desk has been cleaned out. :|

So basically he quit, but is leaving everyone hanging while the boss is just going to eventually figure it out. It's not like it's a huge loss or anything as we've all been carrying his load over the last few years, but jeez. This guys made almost $100k a year and he just didn't care (yes, I know that isn't a lot of money to a lot of your pukes, but for most of us, that is pretty damned good!)

What a shithead! :|

Jugs

EDIT: He's around 50 years old.

EDIT 2: Spelling

He's a great guy personally, but after seeing how he uses his family as a way to get out of work.... I have lost a lot of respect for the guy.

That's pretty shitty, I would not think very highly of someone if I knew they did that personally, I have a lot of disdain for those who take advantage like that. I don't blame you for losing respect.

I thought for sure my story would be worse; I was wrong. Your guy will hopefully run into trouble if someone in his family actually does die suddenly.

As for my story, here it is... A friend's coworker wanted a weekend off. He was denied. He decided to fake illness on the days in question. However, obviously management would be on to him since he previously had asked for those days off. So he decided to take ipecac while at work so that he vomited in front of everyone the day before his intended leave. That way it would be credible that he was sick. He also did a "dry run" the weekend before. He actually succeeded. In a way I admire his dedication.

If you're going through that much trouble to get off, then go for it!

Nope, young people's entitlement is high pay for good work. Old people's entitlement is high pay for no work.

Not from my experience, in fact my experience has been the exact opposite.

Not from my experience. Young people tend to be more ambitious and at the same time expect higher pay. Old people usually equate to do nothing middle managers.

That is so true. I've gone from software to finance and back and it's the same old story. You better believe the old guy in the office is surfing porn while you're doing his work.

The old guy is wise. Young people are stupid because they actually COMPLAIN when they have no work to do. Then they wonder why they are let go after complaining for months about not having enough work.

Indeed. Never, EVER complain that you have nothing to do. I hear that so often from some of the younger cats.
