I was asked by him to provide insight into his choice. I didn't inject my opinion onto him. And yes, it seems like a fairly good decision to be an Army Chaplin, but the reality of making that choice could have serious impact to his family and his life. So how bout you get off your high horse and provide some real feedback to my question, instead of your high quality D-BAG response that does nothing than to take down an otherwise positive thread about someone caring about his friend.

That is actually pretty rare though. Big difference between active duty and NG/AR though. Dunno which your b-i-l is.

He is full time and has been for over 20 years. He is a Sgt. Major now (as of 2008). According to what he has told me over half the active personnel haven't been deployed to combat areas (Iraq or Afghanistan). He has been to Korea and Germany twice since 2003.

Also, his nephew enlisted back in 2006 and basically was sent straight to Iraq, he is plain infantry though, he has no specialized job. My cousin however also enlisted in 2006 and hasn't been there yet, but he is a heavy equipment operator. He was sent to Korea. It seems that if you just end up as infantry you are going ASAP.

I'd disagree with the half comment. He's kind of out of the loop anyways because of his rank and duty stations.

At any major US base, 90% of the base has been deployed. The only ones who haven't either arrived at the base within the last 6 months or were broken at some point.

Whys that? I loved my time in, and spent 22 overseas. So much that my plan is to go back active duty after college.

I imagine searching for IEDs would suck and things like that.

Not everyone but right now a very larger majority are there.

Not to drag this into politics, but I would rather our forces were spent fixing our roads,schools,bridges,etc. Imagine if the entire Iraq deployment was home and sent to help with katrina.

Did you ever think that he's doing it so he can secure his retirement through the military? My GF's dad was an Officer in the Navy but got out and cashed in early. But if he can get in the reserves for 3 years he can get his pension.

Reserve pension doesn't start till 60 and isn't that amazing.
