It's just a polite way of saying "your work sucks, we don't want you here, get the hell out!"
It's also a way of saying "I just don't like you, so get the hell out". When you're in your probationary period, they don't have to have a rational cause.

They don't have to have a rational cause outside of a probationary period.

Did your "friend" suck at their job?

No idea, I didn't work with them. I'm guessing from the above replies that the employer wasn't satisfied with their performance though.

So it was friends who were fired?

2, 3, 4? More?

1 - I didn't want to use him / her so specified them and their.

Maybe in the future your friend should "suck" more and then maybe they wouldn't be fired.

So you don't know the gender or don't wan't to specify so just say "IT"

Them / their has turned to just PC BS and is a bastardization of the english language.

That depends; if you're in a union (especially in a closed-shop state), they had better have a well-documented cause for firing someone. There are other circumstances, but I'm too lazy to get into them all here. Regardless, if you're in a probationary period you're at the absolute mercy of your boss.

The employee was probably within the probationary period as well which makes it even easier to fire them.

Yea he said 2 months and every probation period I've seen is 3 months. After those 3 months it's much harder to fire someone.

thghout it was just as easy in a work-at-will state?

If you're under a CBA, it doesn't matter if you are in a probationary period or not, it's going to be hard as hell to get fired. Please get into these other cirumstances, pending they aren't something to do with statutory exceptions, public policy exceptions, implied contract exceptions, good-faith exceptions, or anything of the kind. I would be interested in learning.

That depends on that particular state's laws. Here, you can work for someone for 50 years, come to work one day and find that your key doesn't work anymore.
http://www.dllr.state.md.us/labor/wagepay/wpatwill.htm

"In Maryland, employees work "at the will" of their employers. This means, in the absence of an express contract, agreement or policy to the contrary, an employee may be hired or fired for almost any reason -- whether fair or not -- or for no reason at all.

There are certain exceptions to this general rule which provide some protection to employees from illegal discrimination based on such categories as race, color, gender, national origin, religion, age, disability or marital status. Examples of other employment at-will exceptions include laws which protect employees from termination or retaliation for filing workers' compensation claims, for attempting to enforce rights to receive overtime or the minimum wage, for asserting rights to work in a safe and healthy workplace, for refusing to commit criminal acts, for reporting for jury duty or military service, or for being subject to a wage attachment for any one indebtedness. Terminating an employee for any of these specific reasons may constitute a violation under the applicable State or federal law."

FTW you mean.

FTW for sure

Stop sucking balls at work and things will work out.

Heh, in many cases it doesn't matter how productive you are. Manager has a 2nd cousin he wants to bring in? Personality conflict? Internal politics of any sort? Discrimination? Percieved pro-union sentiment? Yeah, you'll regret living in an at-will state.

Who gives a shit. Do you really want to work for someone who would do that anyway? This isn't the 1920s. Go work for someone who's a good fit for you.
