yeah forgot to do that the other day after messing around inside my computer. the computer hung, and it wouldn't power off, and it'd keep crashing loading windows... then i looked in the bios and CPU temp was being reported at 86 degrees C. thats 187 degrees F. took the heat sink 30 minutes to cool off

in a related note, athlons are indestructable.

Did that once before changing mobo's for a friend at a lan party. Thankfully I noticed it about 5seconds after pushing the power button. Quickly shut down the PSU and plugged in the fan. No harm done.

ELFenix you beat my current hottest temp i've seen an Athlon, which was 85C. Friend upgraded from a 1700+ to a 2100+. Didn't understand why it wouldn't boot to windows. He didn't change the HS that he had before. Woooo it was cookn'

Installed a Speeze heatsink, and he was good to go.

I think my athlon beats most high records for temp.
1900+ palamino, the cpu fan failed, highest recorded temp was 108C
this was the external sensor on the k7s5a, and the system was running at 100fsb due to stability issues

After replacing the fan stability became fine, and cpu temp is currently 50-60C under full load, I'm quite amazed that it survived.

lol WTG man
yeah those Athlons can take alot of heat.. it's pretty crazy... mine at work one day when the A/C went off in the dead of summer hit 65C and was running perfectly stable (and it was plugged in!!) heh

that was only an Athlon 900 too!!

lucky it's still alive

I find it hard to believe that any Athlon could run properly without an attached heatsink. They would burn out in a few seconds. I realize they may continue to run with the the fan.

few seconds? i think its less than that. i did have the heatsink attached right.

took it about 10 minutes for it to get too hot to stay on. i run seti so that was full load.

THe one time I tried an Athlon, the heatsink fan could go on either way without any manual or anything, so I put ion backwards, I'm 15, and it burned in less than 4 or 5 seconds. That wasn't a good thing either. But, they took it back after realizing it was burned and because the heatsink/fan didn't come with any manual or any way to know how it goes on.

The heatsinks aren't nearly as bad now, the worst thing about them is using a screwdriver to get the force required to get them on (at least for the clips, never used a heatsink that bolts to the motherboard)

the cpu will generally live as long as the heatsink is properly attached, but you'll end up being rather unstable, and probably figure out that you forgot something as simple as the fans power

(I forgot the to plug the fan on my tbird 800 in when doing a whole bunch of screwing around with it to get the picky board to post, no damage done.)

you could have simply looked at the bottom of the heatsink to see how it matches up yeesh.
