You might want to see the cdfreaks forum for more info about checking the reliability of your DVD after its burned. I have a BENQ 1620 and use only Taiyo Yuden, Sony TY's and verbatim which all give me DVD's with extremely low errors. I think that's as good of a backup solution as anything else. (downside...just a bit time consuming to scan everything)
You don't even need to do that anymore. Just check the "Verify data after writing" box, and it'll check your DVD for errors. Easy.

He just got a dud... it happens in EVERYTHING.

What he's dumb about though, is not having backups. I can't believe people having 100GB+ storage, and aren't RAID1 or RAID5 them (hell, i know a guy with a 400mb drive that he doesn't have backup of)

never put sensitive data on a new hard disk untill a few months after you buy it, or even just a month

There are a LOT of junk DVD blanks out there. Yes, I've run DVD-scanning software. That's why I don't trust them! Hopefully, it's getting better.

With hard drives so cheap, I have a hard time justifying spending the time to burn and test DVDs. I'll use them to make an archival backup of data once in a while. But I would never use them for daily backups. It's too much work! And, the free NTBackup program which integrates so well with XP and Windows Server, doesn't support CD or DVD burning.

pft, i still don't trust it. Well, more of a compatibility issue really. I have dvds burned w/ my 2x pioneer I used to have... I was lucky I had a spare dvd rom drive that could get the data off them. My new 4x pioneer (both minus r) could not read it. Nor could the NEC I bought later (tried it on a whim to see if it would read).

but it's a moot point, My documents and stuff I burn to dvd.. but have a duplicate on my file server... which I decided on raid 5... but might just change to raid 0. it will have it's own backup as well, and I don't really need availability.

I'm not sure what DVD burner and media you use (or what you mean by junk DVD blanks), but I have had my BENQ 1620 for over year and only once got a bad batch of "good" media. I got a 100 pack of verbatim awhile ago on clearance from Amazon and about halfway through the spindle, the quality went down by about 2 points....that's pretty remote. Maybe its an issue of luck but the quality of the media I have used has always been pretty consistent.

Again, its very important to use media that has good compatilibility with your burner, and particularly high end media. Best Buy and Staples always have 50% deals on Verbatim (MCC)and Sony TY's so the higher end media isn't necessarily that expensive either.

Sorry if I am taking this off topic

btw, I agree that DVD backups are a lot of work
