Friends Dad Died - Send Dinner to His Family?

Hey Guys -

My childhood best friends father died... Is it appropriate to send his family dinner. I know when my grandmother died we were all ordering food all the time because no one wanted to cook. I just want to do something nice for them to take a load off of them. If this isn't appropriate are there any other ideas?

We do it here in the northwest too. We actually setup schedules for who takes dinner when.

You don't ask. It's a gift, probably the only appropriate thing to do for someone in a time like this. It means a lot to people.

I think you usually have some type of casserole or something that is made then put in the fridge, then given to the family. That way all they do is heat it and eat.

I'm not sure what the custom is. When my mom died, we had a meal brought to us almost every night for about a week. It was really appreciated since buying food and cooking it wasn't something we wanted to deal with.

Cooked hams a great idea. Ziti is a great one too and next tiem we need to do something like this I might consider it.

We lost my mother and mother in law within 11 months of each other. Trust me. The last thing on peoples minds is cooking and eating but if the foods there it gets picked at until appetites return.

There are a few situations where its good to send meals to send food I think. My family was in a car accident and even though no one was seriously injured I was in a cervical brace and my wife had a sprained lower back. Our family brought some meals in so we didnt need to try to cook for our children.

A couple of years back my dad had a stroke two days before Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving one of my brother's friends brought us a full cooked turkey. It helped make things seem a little bit better for that day.

I'm surprised there are any smartass comments. Pretty common practice for close friends as far as I'm concerned.

It sounds like a nice idea, but you should really do it in person. I've personally always given modest amounts of cash to help with funeral expenses or other things.

Good gesture, but it would mean more if you brought it over yourself. It's not just making it easy that helps, it's having company to stave off the depression.
