rig is -
gigabyte 965-s3
6300 c2d
500GB hdd
xp w/ sp2
2GB of this stuff
450W FSP
7600gt

anyway, running the 6300 @ stock speed so ram is @ 2:3 with auto set timings of 5-5-5-15. it errors out on orthos within an hour with both sticks and the more V you apply the faster it errors out (not exceeding +0.3V, so 2.0-2.1V only). with a certain single stick i last about 5hrs, then errors out. running the blend test exclusively in orthos. small ffts seem to not have an issue, using dimm slots 2 & 4 (same color which is how the m/b wants it)

i am assuming the ram needs to be rmaed, anything else you guys can think of? did i miss anything?

Try using the proper stock timings of 4-4-4-12 at 2.1v

Then boot into and run memtest. See if memtest then passes the ram.

he was able to run memtest for 2hrs with no issues. i am going to have him run it tonight overnight to see if it error out. i will have him change the settings to. i do have a question - there are usually more than these settings, so what about the others?

in the cpu-z screen shot he sent me it is currently like this -
cas - 5
ras to cas - 5
ras precharge - 5
tras - 15

now the spd shows setting for 266MHz as this -
cas - 4
ras to cas - 4
ras precharge - 4
tras - 10
trc - 14

and i am assuming there are other options as if i remember correcty even my rig in sig has other settings, so what do i have him set all the settings to?

thanks in advance,
bob

I have the same RAM on DS3. It works easily at 800 MHz 2.0 V 4-4-4-12. I tried more (upto something like 870 at 2.0 V) with no issues. I have no doubt that it can do more if I wanted.
So I'm guessing you probably have couple of bad sticks. Just RMA them. I would definitely give these RAM another try

try more NB/SB voltage. Sometimes fast memory needs this for Intel's memory controller

from my op - it errors out on orthos within an hour with both sticks and the more V you apply the faster it errors out (not exceeding +0.3V, so 2.0-2.1V only)

is this what you are talking about or is there a different V setup? is it labeled nb/sb V? unfortunately he is in another state so i haven't seen the bios setup or the hidden bios options...

I'm talking about your northbridge and southbridge voltages

after looking at the manual i do see a fsb overvoltage and a mch overvoltage control. would i be correct to have him up the fsb overvoltage the +0.1V? also, what does this do? and will it cause excessive heat requiring a fan since i think the nb is passively cooled on this m/b....

thanks all for the assistance

bump for an explanation regarding the n/b (fsb?) overvoltage and exactly what it does, and should it be needed when running at stock speeds...

thanks in advance,
bob
