Friendster is some "find a friend" site where you can meet your friends' friends and so on.

I click on random people and I'm connected to them 10 networks. Makes me think that all computer users in the world are connected by fewer than six degrees of freedom; Probably more like 4.

I'm not saying I like or even dislike it, but just logging in and seeing that I'm connected to my exgirlfriends by 20 different friend networks was REALLY SCARY.

UPDATE #1: Is this just a west-coast thing or is it everywhere?

How is this different from Hotornot or Facethejury? Basically the only difference is that instead of meeting someone completely random, you will meet someone who is a friend of your friend's uncles niece's daughter's friend.

i did it because i was bored and some of my friends who don't usually do these things did it. i think it's more of a network too if anything. i'm not interested in meeting people even though i'm single, it's just interesting to find out how you're connected to certain people.

If you make a bulletin post, all of your friends gets it so in that case it's pretty cool.. That's pretty much how I use it. I let folks know what's going on (ie: camping trips, lake trips, etc.)

that's not a bad idea, most of my friends aren't doing it either because they're not big enough internet geeks to participate or they're just not interested.

Huh? The way you described the network sounds confusing. However, I get it from reading from the horse's mouth.

Here's what I think: I still find internet dating freaky. However, if my real life friend hooks me up with someone that he or she knows in real life, except we communicate via the 'net, I don't mind. So I would like to know how this supposed friends of mine meet these other friends that they want to link me with. The only time I ever really considered meeting someone via the 'net was the case of the meet a millionaire network with possibility of marriage. It seemed like a nice site with classy looking women, so I figured it wasn't such a bad idea if I didn't have to pay anything for it but the guy had to. I don't know what became of that site though . . . I'm afraid there aren't millionaires there anymore . . . at least by definition.

it's not just west coast...most of the ppl i know on there are east coasters...i find it cool to a certain degree, i gotta admit i thought it was cool finding my friends in NYC connected to my friends in TX, UT and CA and not thru me...but it gets boring really quick...nowadays i only log in to approve/reject requests or to read testimonials...

I have an account.. Only added one friend so far and I'm somehow connected to 26000 people.. o-O

My only purpose of using it is to maybe find lost friends; friends I had in middle school/high school who I don't talk to anymore but wish to.

You defeat the whole purpose of the system. You said yourself it's a friend meet friend yet you admit to clicking on RANDOM people to increase your connections. That's why friendster is going to take a dive, quick.

WTF is Xanga?? I see it mentioned quite a few times at people's bio on Friendster. Seems to be a cool idea although they should make it so it doesn't go further than 5 degrees of separetion IMO.
