Ha ha, I came in here to be the old fart who reminded everyone about Buddy Rich, who, if you had to pick just ONE drummer, would have to be the choice imho, but I see I didn't have to.

Neil Pert certainly is great amongst current guys.

Finally, I have to mention my own sentimental trio: Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell, and Keith Moon. Each one of these guy rocked my socks off live, although it may have been the drugs.

Keith Moon as you never seen him before!

holy fuck I am going to this

I just came across this.....

TOOL's Danny Carey and singer Deborah Bonham, sister of late LED ZEPPELIN drummer John Bonham, have been added to the list of performers at "Bonzo: The Groove Remains The Same", a special concert honoring John Bonham on Saturday, September 25 at the Key Club in Hollywood, California.

Event co-organizer and currentWHITESNAKE drummer Brian Tichy says, "I don't even know where to start. This is a glorified 'Bonzo garage jam party' gone haywire!

"We just confirmed the mighty Danny Carey of TOOL! One song was missing from the setlist and Danny is performing it! We also confirmed John Bonham's sister, singer Deborah Bonham!

"To have Jason, Deborah, AND Zoe Bonham all performing on the same night actually hasn't set in as reality. But this is what we all wanted: a true, organic, honest, acknowledgment to a man who has left most of us drummers perplexed as he simply dominated the drums with finesse, power and groove!"

Tichy continued, "Did I mention the menu for the night? We've got 'The Bonzo Burger and Four Sticks!' Did I mention the name of the the house band for the evening? Well, it's THE MOBY DICKS, the world's best Bonham tribute band! Each drummer picks their favorite song and gets on the Bonzo kit front and center stage and gets groovy!

"I've also received some great quotes from some of the best drummers around that can't be there yet wished they could. You won't want to miss this night!"

Quotes:

"This event sounds like a total blast and a long-overdue tribute to a drummer that was such a huge hero of mine and to so many other drummers... I would do anything to be there to play, to watch, to pay tribute... but unfortunately I will unable to attend as I will be playing with AVENGED SEVENFOLD in Seattle that night... best of luck to all my fellow drummers, have a blast and long live the king: Bonzo!!!" - Mike Portnoy (ex-DREAM THEATER)

"WOW! What to say? It is so awesome for all these great drummers come together to honor our drumming hero John Bonham! He is always referred to for anything and everything drums. Sound, feel, groove, vibe, parts, beats etc... He wrote the bible on hard rock drumming! I am sorry to miss out on this great evening as I will be playing right down the road with KISS at the Epicenter Festival in Fontana, California. I'm sending you all a 'Whole Lotta Love'. Peace." - Eric Singer (KISS)

"Hello everyone... I'm on tour in Europe right now, I really wish I could be there to celebrate the greatness of Bonzo with all my bros. He still amazes and inspires me... every time I hear a ZEP tune on the radio or pop in 'Physical Graffiti', I'm blown away on how it makes me feel and how timeless his drumming is. It cracks me up on how every engineer out there still tries to get that 'Bonham' drum sound in the studio and on people's records. Hope everyone has a freagin' blast, hit 'em HARD!!!" - Ray Luzier (KORN)

"I want to play the CRUNGE, but I can't... I'll be on tour for this amazing event. Bonham was and still is my favorite drummer, the foot, the feel, the power, the sound, the legend. God bless John Bonham — has anyone seen the bridge?" - Charlie Benante (ANTHRAX)

"I'm so bummed that I can't be a part of this incredible tribute to Bonzo that Brian Tichy put together. I will be out on the road with THE CULT at that time. I'm sure it's going to big a huge success! I will definitely be there in spirit! Bonzo was such a huge influence on me. He had it all... the groove, the sound, the look... Everything. He was the best!!! May he always be remembered... R.I.P John Henry Bonham." - John Tempesta (THE CULT)

September 25, 2010, marks the 30th anniversary of the passing of John Bonham. His groove and sound is considered to be the most influential of all rock and roll drummers; John "Bonzo" Bonham is the undisputed king. Bonzo will once again be honored in a special concert featuring rock's biggest names behind the kit at the Key Club in Hollywood, California.

On stage and for one night only, a rotating cast of guest drummers perform their favorite LED ZEPPELIN songs.

Confirmed drummers include:

* Steven Adler (GUNS N' ROSES, ADLER'S APPETITE)
* Vinny Appice (BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN & HELL)
* Kenny Aronoff (JOHN COUGAR, JOHN FOGERTY)
* Frankie Banali (QUIET RIOT)
* Bobby Blotzer (RATT)
* Jason Bonham (LED ZEPPELIN, FOREIGNER)
* Fred Coury (CINDERELLA)
* Jimmy D'Anda (BULLETBOYS)
* James Kottak (SCORPIONS)
* Abe Laboriel (PAUL MCCARTNEY)
* Khurt Maier (SALTY DOG)
* Stephen Perkins (JANE'S ADDICTION)
* Chris Slade (THE FIRM, AC/DC)
* Chad Smith (RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, CHICKENFOOT)
* Brian Tichy (WHITESNAKE, FOREIGNER, BILLY IDOL)
* Joe Travers (ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA, DURAN DURAN)
* Simon Wright (AC/DC, DIO)
* Zoe Bonham
* Danny Carey (TOOL)
* Deborah Bonham

Carmine Appice (VANILLA FUDGE, ROD STEWART) and Mike Portnoy (DREAM THEATER, AVENGED SEVENFOLD) will perform via video.

Joining the drummers on stage will be musicians Brent Woods (guitar), Michael "Denim" Devin (bass), Keith St. John (vocals), Stephen LeBlanc (keyboards) and Brian Tichy (guitar).

"Not a day goes by where I don't think of John Bonham's snare sound, and it hit me — 'Why isn't there a Bonzo tribute where every drummer gets up on a Vistalite kit, with gong and timpanis, and plays their favorite ZEPPELIN song?" Tichy, said. "I thought of all the drummers I know that worship at the alter of John Bonham and being in L.A., there are so many here."

Promoter Joe Sutton took care of the rest and has helped organize this striking tribute. His moxie for the all-mighty Bonzo and LED ZEPPELIN has never wavered.

"First and foremost, LED ZEPPELIN is the greatest band in the world and it is not a coincidence that John Bonham was the drummer," Sutton said. "Bonham's drumming is one of the main reasons that they were able to sound so huge."

Sutton continued, "I remember the day that John Bonham died; it broke my heart. Not only to lose a great man and the best drummer in the world, but to lose LED ZEPPELIN as a band was just devastating to myself and everyone I knew. So to have a chance to put together a tribute 30 years later for the almighty Bonzo I will use all of my efforts and experience to put together a very special night."

Tickets for "Bonzo: The Groove Remains The Same" can be purchased at Keyclub.com.

The Key Club is located at 9039 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

Buddy Rich. Can't see how there could be a dispute that he's the most "accomplished".

Of the current crop, Mike Portnoy, for reasons cited in previous posts.

Neil Peart outlived Moon and Bonham, so I'd say just by his catalog he's the top among them. Probably the most "accomplished" drummer alive.

The jazz guys get screwed in these types of discussions.

Objective? Yeah, right. For this to be objective we need some sort of quantifiable test that every drummer in existence would have to take (or could be applied to every drummer). Since no such test exists for any artistic field, the proposal that we come up with an objective answer to this question is laughable.

besides, everyone knows that Ringo was the best.

The flip side to those huge kits that Rush and Dream Theater use is that you should see what Buddy Rich does with 4-6 drums and a couple of cymbals. Which is more impressive?

Watching all the videos Buddy Rich seems to be amazing. Not that the other guys aren't good, but Buddy just has some badass old school in him and he freaking kills.

I honestly wasn't that impressed with the video someone posted of the Rush drum solo. I didn't watch the entire thing, but the first 4-5 he's using a bunch of electronic drums and triggers. He's an amazing drummer, but I was not overly impressed.

Neil vs Buddy

Buddy was slightly faster (and out of control like when he hit the microphone at the beginning of the video) but Neil is just so much more complex and edges Buddy out because he adds so many more sounds (look at Peart's use of bass at the end of the video). To me, it's like comparing if Magic (could do everything) or Bird (such a great shooter) was better at basketball.

To me fame would be an indicator as to how accomplished a drummer is or was.
I gotta go with John Bonham. But the success of most drummers if not all drummers is tied to the band or group they play for.

Wait, out of control? He hit a mic that was above his hand because he raises it up too high. I mean, I wouldn't call that out of control. He didn't lose a stick. Not to mention that he didn't even miss a beat!!! He looked up and kept right in tempo playing.

Regardless, they are both awesome. I just sort of like the old school jazz aspect to Buddy's playing.
