15mph over is pretty safe near Boston, on highways at least. 20-25 over is pretty safe on some roads (MA 128) considering you're holding up traffic if you're going any slower...

Well there comes a point when going any faster gives up a huge safety margin and causes a colossal loss of gas mileage. If the speed limit was 100 mph on the highway I doubt I would exceed 75 or 80 routinely.

13 over on the highway in southcentral PA if what I was told by a local cop.

Only ticket I ever got was coming off of 95 in North Carolina at 40. I was hauling it just like everybody does on 95 and was doing 72 in a 55. He was literally sitting on the bank a quarter mile from the exit and got me. Due to the speed over 55, I could not pay it on the spot - had to FOLLOW HIM to a local justice of the peace where they set a date 2 months from then that I could plead and pay my fine. Clinton County NC had a nice little racket going on there years ago.

They won't bother you unless you go +10 over in most places. In residential areas, work zones, or school zones, I never go more than +5.

On interstates, usually they won't bother you unless you are at least +25 or +30, however, those speeds are very common when traffic permits in the Chicago area. (traffic only permits those speeds during very limited hours)

Residential: (Limit 35 or under) +5
Main Road: (limit 40 to 60) +10
Expressway: (limit 55) +25
Tollway: (limit 55) varies by road, but usually +30

It is very dependent upon the road. There are some towns that will write tickets at 1 MPH over and some expressways where traffic usually moves at 90mph in the mid lanes or nearing 100 in the fast lanes depending on traffic. My current car is limited to 81, and it will not go fast enough to be in the fast lane on some expressways; especially 290 or the extensions where the slow lane traffic is usually above 80 (limit 55). When I used to have a much longer commute many years ago, I would often get passed by folks doing 95+ in a 55, and the police would stick their arm out the window and point down to have them slow down, but wouldn't ticket them. I know a few state troopers in my state (helps when a friend's dad owns a bunch of convenience stores, so cops are there always for free breakfast) and there are no hard and fast rules. Most of the ones I talked to said they would ticket faster on bad driving (lane control, dangerous driving, etc) than on speed alone; but going a lot faster than traffic would get you stopped.

Every single one also said being polite is the best way to not get a ticket when pulled over. They don't want to get out of their cars to talk to you on an expressway. For example, many moons ago I was pulled over by a state trooper when I was driving well over a hundred in my Ram (no traffic at all, middle of the night on expressway). He yelled at me, I was polite, apologized, and he knocked my ticket down to 84, which is the maximum allowed for taking the online traffic school class so the ticket doesn't go on your record.

Eastern CT here. Haven't gotten pulled over, but I have a radar detector. 90% of the troopers in the u turn zones, don't have it turned on, so I feel like they just sit there to fake people out.

The ones who have it turned on are the local cops. I've passed them doing about 10 over, but that's because I knew they were coming and was doing 20 over before hand.

I know some forces get snap-on radar, but the places around here are probably too poor for that crap.

Never got lasered here, but I did get lasered 3-4 times back in NY. NY cops are douches and will pull you over for doing anything over 10mph on the highways.

10 km/h on normal roads, unless school zone or dangerous/busy area
15-20km/h on 100 highways

For me personally, in the burbs of Chicago, I start writing tickets at 15 over. Generally, you are not getting a break at that speed.

On sideroads where schools are and kids play, 10-12 mph, depending on time of day and your attitude.

Been pulled over for 5, but no ticket.

But for the most part, they don't fuck with you until you get close to 10. Assuming there is actually a speed trap. Said traps often involve sitting on a road that arbitrarily changes from a 50-55mph zone to a 35-45.

Most of the time, though, they just drive around and pull people over because: it 'looks like' you were speeding, you have a light out, or your tags are expired.

Factors involved (in order of importance)

Your age
The shittiness of your car
What you look like
Number of people are in the car
What they look like
Time of the month
Sex of the officer
Time of the month
Your speed

Good to know that the law is meted out with such a blind eye around there?

At least you don't work in Hainesville.

There's a saying...9 you're fine, 10 you're mine. But I don't think it would make a good legal defense. But you're honor...

I believe that's true of most people, actually. The average speed of traffic on the autobahn (no speed limits, great roads) is ~85 MPH. The reason why speeding is so routine in the US is that the speed limits are set lower than the "natural speed" of traffic on those roads...which actually broadens the distribution of speeds that people are going, compromises safety, and leads to a certain casual disregard of other traffic control signs and devices.

We need built in speed trackers in all cars.

Go over the speed limit, get a ticket. everytime. no exceptions.

Around Chicago-
Interstate +15mph before they'll even look at you. You're far more likely to be pulled over for weaving through lanes, etc.
Main surface streets +10 or so. Depends on enforcement cycle, specific 'burb, etc.
Residential +5, Though I've been pulled over because I took a corner too fast for them (yet under the limit)

It's coming. Cars already have GPS and logging. All that's needed is the idiot tyrants who don't understand technology to realize they can monetize it.

I've gone past cops with their radar gun out going 5 MPH over, and they didn't seem to care. Although, there's one area around here where if you are going even 1 MPH over, you will get pulled over. A friend's father actually got a ticket for going 56 in a 55!

I normally do +5 MPH on most roads (probably not with school lights flashing though) and +7 MPH on 65-MPH-or-faster roads.

Connecticut highways are pretty reasonable. I've never heard of a person getting a speeding ticket for 10-14 mph over the limit if speed is the only factor. If you're weaving, tailgating, passing on the right or doing other idiotic stuff to draw attention to yourself that could change. But on the whole 65-69 in a 55 zone is pretty safe. At 70mph all bets are off, the cop might nail you and he might nail the guy doing 75 instead.
