From where you live, How much over the speed limit do cops start giving out tickets?

in DC metro area and the corridor between dc and nyc, it's 15mph over the limit.
i have gone 9mph and 13mph (cruise control) past cops sitting in speed traps w/no problems.

I try to stay within 10 km/h as that is considered the safe zone, but on the highway where the limit is 60 you can get away with 15. Maybe even 20.

I was going about 10 over once, maybe a bit more, and I had a cop on my ass. I was not sure if I should slow down to the limit, speed up because he's tailgating me, or just keep going the same speed. I figured going the same speed was probably the safest. He eventually turned.

Speedometer calibration is allowed +-10% so 5 MPH at 50 MPH should be thrown out in court.

He was pacing you - slowing slightly or at least not speeding up is the correct response. A lot of drivers speed up when someone rides their tail. If you do that, all the officer needs to do is check his speedometer so he knows what to write the ticket for.

Here in NJ, depending on the local township, on local roads, 5MPH over will get you stopped. On the main highways, you are usually safe if you stay under 14MPH over. Point to remember is for radar units, if patrol car is stationary they are accurate to +/- 1MPH ... this changes to +/- 2MPH when the patrol car is moving. Hence, they wait until 5MPH over to stop you or the ticket could be beaten in court. In a school zone, especially with kids around, best to do the speed limit exactly (25MPH) or less.

Cops in my town are fairly lenient towards speeding tickets. Some municipalities I try to avoid if possible though. Interstate is usually 15-20 over but I don't know for sure I've never been pulled on the highway. Rural areas 10 over is pushing it.

It depends on if you have Maine plates or not. I've seen cops pass people already doing 10-15 over to ticket a masshole doing the same.

Depends on where you. 5 over is always fine. 6-10 can get a bit iffy in some of the cities and townships, esp if you are going from a bad area into a good area of the Detroit Metro Area (Probably still won't get a ticket as they are just checking to make sure you aren't up to no good)

As for certain parts of I-94 - I have no idea as you never see cops on it. Its not unusual to see a large number of people doing 85-90mph in a 55mph.

They'll give you about 10mph over in my location it seems. Less than that, and they'll get ya if they're bored, you're swerving, or they need to meet the quota.

Also the car speedometer usually overestimates your speed. If the GPS speed is precise, then most cars I've driven indicate 5-7 km/h too much.

that's weird.
Here there is just a grey saab with a cam inside that patrols the motorways, but there's mostly mobile radars beside the road.
Cops don't really give speeding fines themselves.

There's small towns on the eastern shore that will ticket for anything over the speed limit. That's how they make their money. Around here, you're generally safe with 9mph over on a highway. Lower speeds are variable, and you just have to use good judgment.

I have no clue. I haven't had a speeding ticket since 2001. I typically don't drive over the speed limit.

Generally it's 10km/h over the limit here in town, and 20km/h over on the highways. Cops usually won't pull over "high milers" on the highway unless they're doing 140. Highway patrol is more on the look out for aggressive or distracted drivers.

The local fuzz loves their speed traps though. Easy money, minimum work. It's actually making the roads less safe. They're spending too much time booking people on empty country roads for speeding, rather than deal with the road ragers and people texting. The ones actually causing the accidents.

Probably around 20 over depending on the speed zone. In a school zone you're looking at 10 topps.

Seems to be about 15 here in PA. Of the 4 tickets I've gotten they've been 16, 18, 23, and 31 over.

I've driven by dozens of cops with my cruise control set to 10 over and haven't gotten a ticket.

That gets you a ticket pretty much every time here.

I go 5 -7 over (never in the left lane!)- never have gotten a ticket. I'm guessing over 10 local and over 15 on highway
